Freighter sinks off Turkish coast, 9 crew missing (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkish Coast Guard boats were searching for nine crew members after a Cambodia-flagged freighter ship sank in stormy seas off Turkey's Black Sea coast on Tuesday, officials said. Two other crew members were rescued.

The ship, Vera, was sailing to Turkey's Aliaga port from Russia when it sank off the coast of Eregli during a storm, Gov. Erol Ayyildiz said. He said police were also searching the shore for the missing crewmen.

Ayyildiz initially said 10 crew were missing and that they were Polish nationals. But the Maritime Affairs Directorate later said there were 10 Ukrainians and one Georgian crew aboard the ship, which was carrying scrap metal.

Those rescued were the ship's second and third captains, the directorate said in a statement. At least three tug boats had joined the search-and-rescue effort, it added.

"By the time the Coast Guard arrived in response to the distress call, the ship had already sunk," Irfan Erdem, head of the Chamber of Commerce for the region, told Turkey's NTV television.

He said a storm likely caused the ship's cargo to shift, tilting the vessel to the side and causing it to take on water.

The accident occurred some 10 days after another cargo ship brushed against two anchored vessels during severe weather off the coast of Istanbul, taking on water for hours before authorities pulled it ashore using a tug boat.

Ill. nuclear reactor loses power, venting steam (AP)

BYRON, Ill. ? A nuclear reactor at a northern Illinois plant shut down Monday after losing power, and steam was being vented to reduce pressure, according to officials from Exelon Nuclear and federal regulators.

Unit 2 at Byron Generating Station, about 95 miles northwest of Chicago, shut down at 10:18 a.m., after losing power, Exelon officials said. Diesel generators began supplying power to the plant, and operators began releasing steam to cool the reactor from the part of the plant where turbines are producing electricity, not from within the nuclear reactor itself, officials said.

The steam contains low levels of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, but federal and plant officials insisted the levels were safe for workers and the public.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission declared the incident an "unusual event," the lowest of four levels of emergency. Commission officials also said the release of tritium was expected.

Exelon Nuclear officials believe a failed piece of equipment at a switchyard caused the shutdown. The switchyard is similar to a large substation that delivers power to the plant from the electrical grid and that takes power from the plant to the electrical grid. Officials were still investigating the equipment failure.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng said officials can't yet calculate how much tritium is being released. They know the amounts of tritium are small because monitors around the plant aren't showing increased levels of radiation, she said.

Tritium molecules are so small that tiny amounts are able to pass from radioactive steam from the reactor into the water used to cool the turbines and other equipment outside the reactor. The steam that was being released was coming from the turbine side.

The amount of releasing steam helps "take away some of that energy still being produced by nuclear reaction but that doesn't have anywhere to go now." Even though the turbine is not turning to produce electricity, she said, "you still need to cool the equipment."

Tritium is relatively short-lived and penetrates the body weakly through the air compared to other radioactive contaminants.

Candace Humphrey, Ogle County's emergency management coordinator, said county officials were notified of the incident as soon as it happened and that public safety was never in danger.

"It was standard procedure that they would notify county officials," she said. "There is always concern. But, it never crossed my mind that there was any danger to the people of Ogle County."

Unit 1 was operating normally while engineers investigate why Unit 2 lost power, which comes into the plant from the outside power grid, Mitlyng said. Smoke was seen from an onsite station transformer, she said, but no evidence of a fire was found when the plant's fire brigade responded.

Mitlyng said Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors were in the control room at Byron and in constant contact with the agency's incident response center in Lisle, Ill.

In March 2008, federal officials said they were investigating a problem with electrical transformers at the plant after outside power to a unit was interrupted.

In an unrelated issue last April, the commission said it was conducting special inspections of backup water pumps at the Byron and Braidwood generating stations after the agency's inspectors raised concerns about whether the pumps would be able to cool the reactors if the normal system wasn't working. The plants' operator, Exelon Corp., initially said the pumps would work but later concluded they wouldn't.

Oil near $99 in Asia on Greece debt concern (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Oil fell to nearly $99 a barrel Monday in Asia amid fresh concerns that the eurozone may refuse to grant Greece a fresh bailout.

Benchmark crude for March delivery was down 42 cents at $99.14 a barrel at midday Kuala Lumpur time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to finish at $99.56 on Friday.

Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore, said crude prices were volatile after Germany's finance minister warned that the eurozone might not give Greece a fresh bailout unless it can overhaul its state and economy. Analysts fear this could reignite the region's debt crisis.

European leaders were to meet later Monday in Brussels to discuss austerity measures and a tentative deal reached Saturday between Greece and its private investors to avert a disastrous Greek default on its debt.

Shum said supply concerns also weighed on the market although Iran has postponed plans to immediately cut the flow of crude oil to Europe in retaliation for EU sanctions over its nuclear program.

Iran also threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil passage, and the head of its national oil company warned Sunday that EU sanctions could push oil prices up to between $120 and $150 a barrel. The market is also awaiting report from an International Atomic Energy Agency team that is currently touring Tehran, Shum said.

"Trade has been flat. The geopolitical tension in Iran and concerns over Greece's debt default are driving oil in different directions. This has helped oil to hold steady," Shum added.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 1 cent to $3.07 per gallon but gasoline futures were steady at $2.92 per gallon. Natural gas added 7 cents to $2.82 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Michigan Voters Don't Favor Legalizing Marijuana (ContributorNetwork)

Michigan voters passed the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act in 2008 with nearly 63 percent of the vote. On the November ballot, Michigan voters might be asked to consider legalizing marijuana for general use. According to a recent poll, residents are far more cautious about that type of law, reports the Detroit Free Press. Here are details about the legalized marijuana petition drive and how residents are responding to it.

* The Committee for a Safer Michigan (Detroit News. Abel said in light of enforcement issues and confusion about its parameters, legalization advocates want to scrap the law. The repeal would make cultivation, manufacture and distribution of marijuana available for anyone over 21 years old who is not incarcerated. Driving or operating machinery under the influence of marijuana would be subject to the same laws as drunk driving.

* According to Michigan's Licensing and Regulatory Affairs office there are about 130,000 registered medical marijuana users. According to Repeal Today , the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program has only made matters worse for those who are suffering and need the drug. Marijuana restrictions haven't prevented children from accessing, have created expensive legal battles and have made it only accessible by drug cartels.

* The petition drive will need 322,609 signatures by July 9 to get it on the November ballot. Supporters say though no state has completely legalized marijuana, presidential candidate Ron Paul has introduced a bill that would allow states to make their own laws about it.

* A poll by EPIC-MRA of Lansing shows more conservative numbers of support, says the Detroit Free Press. 45 percent of respondents said they would favor legalizing pot and 50 percent were against it. The rest was undecided. 43 percent of voters younger than 40 supported decriminalizing marijuana; 55 percent of voters ages 50 to 55 favored it; among voters older than 65, 40 percent agreed.

* In all Michigan counties but Wayne, voters oppose legalizing marijuana.

Apple, Google, 5 Others To Be Denied Dismissal Of ?No Poach? Conspiracy Case

Antitrust Hearing Today7 of the world's most powerful tech companies have been accused of forming an antitrust conspiracy to suppress the compensation of their employees by entering into "no poach" agreements. Today, a San Jose judge will heard a motion to dismiss a class action civil lawsuit in which former employees seek damages from defendants Apple, Google, Adobe, Intel, Intuit, Pixar, and Lucasfilm. The damning evidence against the defendants from a 2010 Department of Justice investigation and the plaintiffs' statement indicate there is more than sufficient evidence for the case to proceed towards trial. If the defendants lose to or settle, tens of thousands of full-time employees of these companies could be compensated. [Update 4:30pm PST : The judge says "This case is going to survive the motion to dismiss", meaning she'll almost surely deny the defendants' motion to dismiss the case when she soon files her official ruling.

Boeing 2012 earnings to be hit by pension expense (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Wednesday that a pension expense larger than Wall Street had anticipated would weigh on its 2012 earnings, but it handed investors good news with expectations for increased commercial aircraft deliveries this year.

The world's largest aerospace and defense company said the expense would amount to 83 cents per share, and it forecast earnings, including the expense, of $4.05 to $4.25 per share on revenue of $78 billion to $80 billion.

Analysts, on average, had expected 2012 earnings of $4.96 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Boeing gave the outlook as part of its fourth-quarter earnings report, which showed higher-than-expected profit on the strength of its commercial airplane deliveries.

"People had been expecting the pension expense was going to go up, but the amount of the increase was more than I was looking for," said Kenneth Herbert, an analyst with Wedbush Securities. "I was looking for something in the range of 50 cents."

Shares of Boeing, a component of the Dow Jones industrial average, were up 0.47 percent at $75.72, after an earlier decline that took its shares to $72.85.

"It's too early for me to say if it's another incremental expense in 2013," Herbert said.

Boeing said the pension expense was partly due to lower interest rates on its pension fund investments over the last two years.

"SOLID OPERATING QUARTER"

Boeing reported fourth-quarter net profit of $1.4 billion, or $1.84 per share, compared with $1.2 billion, or $1.56 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding a favorable tax settlement of 52 cents per share, the company earned $1.31 per share, beating an average Wall Street forecast of $1.01, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company, which competes with Airbus (EAD.PA) for orders, said revenue had risen to $19.6 billion compared with $16.6 billion.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Robert Stallard said in a research note that Boeing had a "solid operating quarter" driven by good margins on its commercial and defense sides.

Revenue for its commercial planes division increased by 31 percent to $10.7 billion. Boeing delivered 477 planes last year, up from 462 in 2010. The company gets paid for airplanes at delivery.

Boeing predicted that it would deliver 585 to 600 commercial airplanes in 2012, more than the 570 Airbus has said it expects to deliver this year. Boeing said that its forecast included an expected 70 to 85 deliveries, half of which will be 787 aircraft and the rest 747-8s.

Revenue for its defense, space and security business rose 4 percent to $8.5 billion.

The company, which boasted an order backlog worth $356 billion, splits its operations between commercial airplanes and defense programs. The defense side of Boeing's business is grappling with government spending constraints, but Boeing said it expects greater spending in international markets.

"We enter 2012 with renewed momentum," Chief Executive Jim McNerney said in a statement. "Our priorities for the year are to continue with disciplined increases in production rates for our commercial airplane customers," he said.

LOFTY GOALS

The company lost the 2011 commercial airplane order race to Airbus. Boeing orders, adjusted for cancellations, totaled 805, compared with 1,419 for Airbus.

Boeing has pledged to strike back in 2012 with sales of its revamped narrowbody, the 737 MAX, which features a new, fuel-efficient engine. The plane is due to enter service in 2017.

Boeing won its first firm orders for the MAX in December as part of a $19 billion deal with Southwest Airlines (LUV.N). The company said it had more than 1,000 orders and commitments for the MAX at the end of 2011, and said that could reach 1,500 by the end of 2012.

The MAX competes with the Airbus A320neo, which also has a new engine. Airbus overtook Boeing in the global passenger jet market in 2003.

Boeing is working to increase production rates on its commercial airplane programs, including the 787 Dreamliner, its new, long-delayed, carbon-composite aircraft. The first delivery of the Dreamliner was made in September after three years of delays.

The company wants to produce 10 787s per month by the end of 2013.

Aviation industry experts have said the target is too ambitious , but Boeing is standing by it.

"I think as each week passes, each month passes, my confidence does grow," McNerney told analysts on a conference call. "These ramp-ups are always difficult and it has our attention."

Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 25: Doozy update, OneSchool, Breakout Boost+, Frederic (Appolicious)

Start forming good habits and watch your progress with Doozy, a today?s leading Fresh App and a to-do list manager that lets you track statistics over time. Following that, we?ve got OneSchool, a college-centric app that brings together lots of information about the universities it covers, from local restaurants to class offerings. Breakout Boost+ heads up our games offering today, bringing more brick-breaking action to the App Store, followed by Frederic ? Resurrection of Music Complete, a rhythm game inspired by the works of Chopin.

Doozy takes your standard task manager app and ups it with stat tracking and a visual element to help keep its users on task. First, you set up your list of priorities like you would in any other to-do list app, marking down the things you need to do and when. Then, you can track any kind of progress you might be making (one example is weight loss) over time, to help you keep at it.

The app can present the data you input in several different ways, including graphs and charts that let you track your progress. And a recent big update adds a lot more features as well, including Dropbox syncing, RSS feeds, notifications and reminders, new icons and lots of other enhancements.

OneSchool (iPhone, iPad) Free

College students will find a lot of useful information on-hand in OneSchool. The app is an aggregation of public information about a university ? local restaurants, class offerings, bus schedules and routes and more handy info ? combine with a bit of social networking to allow users to interact using a Wall feature and create groups to contact one another.

OneSchool is a little limited right now, with only eight colleges represented, but the developer behind the app is working to add more as demand for the app comes in. If you happen to go to one of the covered schools, however, you?ll be able to take advantage of a great deal of useful information. OneSchool is meant to be handy and searchable no matter where you are.

Following up the popularity of Breakout Boost comes Atari?s Breakout Boost+, a new version of the brick-breaker title. Like the earlier version, you control a paddle at the bottom of the screen with touch controls, sliding it around to bounce a ball up into groups of bricks at the top of the screen. The more you break, the higher your score, but if you let the ball bounce past the paddle, you?ll lose it.

Unlike its freemium counterpart, Breakout Boost+ requires an up-front payment of $0.99 to download and packs 100 additional levels that didn?t appear in the earlier title. It also has lots of power-ups that can turn the game in your favor, plus achievements and leaderboards care of Game Center.

Take on the role of a resurrected Frederic Chopin and take on musical combatants the world over in rhythm title Frederic ? Resurrection of Music Complete. In each of Frederic?s levels, you?ll need to tap away at the keys of a piano to match notes that appear on the screen. Hit lots of them in time and you?ll move a bar that measures your progress against your opponent, filling it with green. Miss too many and the bar goes red. You?ll need the bar to be more than 50 percent green in order to win each level.

Frederic contains nine levels to play through, each remixing a Chopin classic in a new and modern way. The game also features an hour of fully-voiced motion comics to tell its story, and Game Center support for leaderboards and achievements to help you measure your skill level.

Daniel Radcliffe's Next Role Is Poet Allen Ginsberg

'I'm hoping to make this year just about film, film, film,' 'Woman in Black' star tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Daniel Radcliffe

While we are still anxiously awaiting the release of "The Woman in Black," Daniel Radcliffe's first big post-"Harry Potter" film, it's never too early to start thinking about what other projects the young superstar will be considering after "Black" opens.

When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe recently, we asked him to give us some clues as to what we might expect from him in the next year, specifically whether he'd officially signed on to a new film following the release of "Black."

"Closer and getting closer every day, but not anything confirmed yet, unfortunately," Radcliffe said of his 2012 working schedule and several film roles he's considering. "Hopefully I'll definitely have three weeks off in February and then shortly after that, I would hopefully be making a film and it would hopefully be over here," he said of his wishes to continue working Stateside, following his run on Broadway in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

"That would be an entirely new experience for me; I've never filmed in America. I'd really like to do that, with an American crew and have that experience," he said. "I'm hoping to make this year just about film, film, film and then maybe get back onstage maybe in the next two years."

While he was cagey about exactly which films he's considering, one Radcliffe role MTV News can now confirm is poet Allen Ginsberg in the independent film "Kill Your Darlings," which is about how Ginsberg and fellow Beat Generation icons Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met.

"It's one of the things that's on the table absolutely. It would be amazing and I'm very, very enthused for that script and that young director," he said of the John Krokidas-helmed project, which is also set to star Elizabeth Olsen, who recently raved about Radcliffe's talent and her excitement to work with him in "Darlings." "It's an independent film, it's welcome to the world of independent film — from one day to the next it could happen or not happen. Until I'm there on the set, I'm not going to say anything about it."

Would Daniel Radcliffe do well in the role of Allen Ginsberg? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Check out everything we've got on "The Woman in Black."

Report: Education management sector expanding (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A new report finds that even in a tough economy, companies that are contracted to manage charter schools and other public schools are expanding.

The report out Friday is by the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado Boulder.

It says that much of the growth is in the area of online learning, known as "virtual schools."

The operators are known as education management organizations. The sector emerged in the 1990s as part of an effort to use the market to force changes in public education. The report notes that there are almost 300 such companies today and that nearly 780,000 students attend schools operated by them.

Lynn Forester de Rothschild: Society and Business in 2011

As aptly captured by Time magazine, 2011 was the 'Year of the Protestor.' From the Arab Spring to the UK riots to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) demonstrations, 2011 witnessed an outpouring of popular discontent aimed at governments and businesses alike. But while OWS dominated headlines here at home with its anti-capitalism message, a quieter, but just as transformative story was taking shape in parallel: that of businesses leading the charge to make the world a better place for the majority. It is a variety of capitalism that would have been fundamental to Adam Smith but is exceptional among capitalists in the 21st century.

With little fanfare, corporations are responding to social challenges - from poverty, to environmental degradation and access to technology. 2011 may one day be remembered as the year when CEOs began to address many problems of society and the year when sustainability joined profit as a driving force of decision making in corporate boardrooms and value creator for corporate stakeholders.

Below are seven influential actions in 2011 that captured this emerging shift in business' relationship with society and caught my eye. With Rio +20 taking place this summer, look for the trend to continue in 2012.

1. Michael Porter and Mark Kramer's Creating Shared Value

The leading voices encouraging businesses to embrace corporate social responsibility (CSR) over the past two decades, Porter and Kramer published perhaps their most influential research to date in 2011. Their report is a pragmatic "how-to" for companies to integrate social challenges into their corporate fabric and thereby increase profits, shareholder value and long-term sustainability for their businesses.

2. Making the Business Case for Social Responsibility

Until this year, the economic benefits of incorporating sustainability in business practices remained largely unknown. As a result, CSR has been seen mainly as a PR tool, helping drive brand imaging. That is about to change thanks to two new Harvard Business School studies. In one study, three Harvard professors showed that over the last eighteen years the stock performance of companies that embraced environmental and social policies greatly outperformed similar companies that did not have the same ethics. Another study revealed that companies that successfully engage in CSR benefit from cheaper bank loans and higher levels of investments.

3. Rethinking the Role of Business

Calls for transforming business are coming from CEOs themselves. In an influential book published on the eve of Harvard Business School's 100th anniversary, business leaders across the world describe their visions for creating a more sustainable capitalist system by transforming their businesses into models of social responsibility.

4. Nestle: Encouraging Sustainable Agriculture

Nestle is one of the first major companies to embrace Porter's Shared Value Concept across its entire operations. In 2011, it operationally launched Nescafe Plan, a $331 million global initiative to boost productivity, sustainability and incomes of millions of farmers across the world. This year alone, they planted 4 million coffee trees in Columbia and began mentoring 10,000 cocoa farmers in Indonesia, the third largest producer of cocoa in the word.

5. Vodafone: Leveraging Cell Phones to Empower Women

Earlier this year Vodafone trained a group of women in Qatar, many of whom were never allowed to hold a job before, to operate their own Vodafone shop. The program is the first of its kind in traditionally conservative Qatar and the greater Middle East, and has empowered its owners and their customers to become more economically independent. In Egypt, Vodafone helped increase female literacy rates from the national average of 70% to 98% in the village of Siwa. These are just two of the dozens of projects within a larger global campaign launched by Vodafone, Hillary Clinton and the United Nations to empower women across the world.

6. GE's Ecomagination

A division of GE, Ecomagination, is leading the charge in providing finance for start-ups developing clean technologies and infrastructure. Over the summer, GE awarded its first Ecomagination Challenge Awards, a contest that will distribute $200 million to innovative start-ups. Going even farther, GE also established a $20 million fund to scale and commercialize the products identified by the challenge. The contest has turned the traditional R&D model on its head - moving energy and infrastructure research away from labs of governments or large companies into the outside entrepreneurial community.

7. Dow Chemical: Revitalizing Michigan's Battered Economy

Earlier this year, the US Small Business Administration partnered with Dow Chemicals and other businesses to establish a $130 million investment fund in Michigan that "will seek investments that would create jobs, diversify the state's economy and generate a profitable return." Dow's $15 million investment represents a growing trend of businesses partnering with Governments to address investment short falls in everything from infrastructure to small businesses. The CEO of Dow is encouraging other companies to pool their financial resources to help create jobs across the country, a move that will benefit companies, cash-strapped governments and ultimately, American workers.

So, as we enter 2012 perhaps we can be grateful for those corporations and individuals who have acted for the improvement of our society for all. As we enter an election year where the theme will be to divide us, it might be worth remembering that those being demonized are in many cases part of the solution not the problem.

Perry supports English as official language in US

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said Friday he would like English to be made the national language of the United States, agreeing with a frustrated voter who railed over the presence of multiple languages in everyday American life.

Perry, whose campaign needs a boost before Tuesday's lead-off Iowa caucuses, spoke at a Cerro Gordo County GOP fundraiser and took questions from the audience at the Mason County Country Club.

The voter who told the Texas governor he was tired of multilingual directions for products drew applause when he said he'd like to see English become the official language of the U.S. government.

"I don't know how the rest of the conservatives in the room feel, but personally, I'm fed up with seeing the directions on every single product on every single shelf of every single store written in four languages," said the man, who didn't give his name.

Perry replied, "That is a statement, that's not a question, and I can agree with it."

Perry, whose state is home to millions of Spanish speakers, is struggling to regain momentum in Iowa. He joined the presidential race in August to great fanfare and then crashed after campaign missteps and lackluster debates.

Trying to connect with conservatives, Perry has seemed willing to embrace more conservative positions as time runs short.

Earlier this week, Perry strengthened his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape and incest. He previously had said he would allow abortion in those instances, as well as when the woman's life was in jeopardy.

A pastor asked Perry about the cases when he'd allow abortion and Perry surprised the audience when he said he had undergone a "transformation" on the subject. He seemed to say he opposed abortion in all cases.

A day later, the governor told reporters that he would still allow abortion when a woman's life was at stake. He did not elaborate.
