Opinion: Porn and Video Games Are Ruining ... - Link Dead Gaming
An article from CNN was brought to my attention today. Titled, ?The Demise of Guys?: How video games and porn are ruining a generation.?
Here?s a small little?excerpt:
Is the overuse of video games and pervasiveness of online porn causing the demise of guys?
Increasingly, researchers say yes, as young men become hooked on arousal, sacrificing their schoolwork and relationships in the pursuit of getting a tech-based buzz.
So, I cannot help but ask? why is ?Psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo attacking the porn industry and games?
I will not endorse adult entertainment. However, I will speak out on the behalf of gaming.
Many times before, ?senators or different activists here in the United States have campaigned to have games: banned, outlawed, production stopped, etc etc ? the list goes on. I often see articles such as Dr. Zimbardo?s and do not waste my time reading. However, with a blatant ignorant title such as ??ruining a generation?? Really? Seriously, this has to stop. ?Especially this:
Norwegian mass murder suspect Anders Behring Breivik reported?during his trial?that he prepared his mind and body for his marksman-focused shooting of 77 people by playing ?World of Warcraft? for a year and then ?Call of Duty? for 16 hours a day.
So slaying raid bosses in WoW and getting a solid KDR in CoD will make you a mass murderer. Under what ground? What were they trying to spin in that trial? Innocent people died ? so lets blame gaming for today?s youth being corrupted. I assume it?s safe to say the Dr?s article is slanted. As is this one. You fight fire with fire.
If you want to read a good article, read this. The Wall Street Journal went as far to say:
A three-year study of 491 middle school students found that the more children played computer games the higher their scores on a standardized test of creativity?regardless of race, gender, or the kind of game played. The researchers ranked students on a widely used measure called the Torrance Test of Creativity, which involves such tasks as drawing an ?interesting and exciting? picture from a curved shape on a sheet of paper, giving the picture a title, and then writing a story about it. The results were ranked by seven researchers for originality, length, and complexity on a standardized three-point scale for each factor, along with detailed questionnaires.
I?m tired of seeing the endless posts about ?gaming is game, gaming harms kittens, gaming is evil?.
It goes as far as Judge David Shaw wanted to?recommend the International Trade Commission to ban the Xbox 360. [source]
We?ve witnessed it all before. If you want to read Dr. Zimbardo?s full article, click here.?Gaming has come a long way. From the?Odyssey to the Ps3 ? with groundbreaking technology and pioneers ? the world we know of video games will stay for a long time.
Lets just pull up a seat, sit back, and relax around a game of Soul Calibur.
Be sure to let me know how you feel.

Using PPC to Boost Affiliate Marketing Profits
?
Pay per click is one of the most cost-effective avenues through which targeted Internet advertising can be accomplished. Forbes magazine states that this type of advertising accounts for almost $8 billion annually, a figure that experts predict will grow at a significant rate. ?Following is a brief overview of how pay per click search engines work:
?
PPC search engines generate listings which are rated based on the amount spent by the website owners who are paying for each click. Internet marketers and advertisers attempt to outbid each other for the purpose of receiving?the highest ranking ?for a particular key word. The objective of this, as one would anticipate, is to rank above one's?competitors and subsequently sell more products or services.
?
The site that ranks number one by the PPC search engines is the one associated with the highest bid. The?advertiser who bid second-highest will rank second, followed by the third highest bidder, and this pattern will?continue up to the final advertiser who placed a bid on a particular phrase or keyword.?
PPC and Affiliate Marketing
?
Typically, affiliate marketers earn their money when the merchants with whom they are associated obtain sales that?
were generated by the affiliate marketer. However, by incorporating PPC, the marketer will be compensated for?every click through generated from his or her site to the website of the merchant. Therefore, PPC offers marketers a?way to make money whether or not a visitor was interested in their product, as long as he or she clicks through to?the other merchant's website.?
?
In addition to being a good source of income, PPC also helps Internet marketers promote their own websites and?products. Most programs of this type also pay commissions immediately, rather than is the case with other?programs where one must reach a minimum earning requirement before his or her money can be accessed.
?
Integrating PPC Into an Affiliate Marketing Program
?
PPC programs are typically associated with ready to use tools that can be implemented on the marketer's website?without much difficulty. Tools of this type include things such as banners, search boxes, and text links. The majority?of search engines use custom solutions and can offer Internet marketers white label affiliate programs. This?enables the marketer to use a short code to place a co-branded, remotely hosted search engine on his or her?website.?
?
Primary PPC Benefits
?
As a marketer may expect, the primary benefit associated with PPC is the ability to earn extra money on the side?while operating one's own business. In addition, lifetime commissions can be earned when the marketer refers his?or her friends to the search engine. It is wise for all affiliate marketers to fully evaluate the benefits offered by PPC?search engines in order to maximize their earnings to the fullest. To ignore the possibility of extra income is not in?the best interest of any Internet marketer. Those who pursue PPC will likely find that over time their income will be?significantly augmented.

the entertaining house: Happy Memorial Day
This is my grandfather, Larry and my Grandmother, Bettina, aka La Jolie Grandmere.
This picture was taken in the mid 1960s just after they married and built their home in the South of France.
Larry always looked at my grandmother as if she was the only one in the entire world...
They shared a love, respect and admiration most only dream...
He served our country. He piloted jet planes in the Second World War.?
He lived long enough to have an amazing career as a novelist and Hollywood producer for MGM Studios.
He lived long enough to meet and marry my grandmother later in life.
He was an amazing, adoring and doting husband, step-father and grandfather...
Among a myriad of accomplishments he was an avid tennis player. He played well until his 90s. He was 10 years older than my grandmother. She passed away nearly 10 years ago from a form of Leukemia.?
He passed away a few months later... from, I am quite certain, a broken heart.
But his life was long and rich and full...?
We must take a moment to thank all of those who have served our country and who are serving our country and to celebrate those who are no longer with us...
And especially those who never got to follow their dreams...
Who never met true loves... Who passed away much too young...
While we remember them, let's celebrate life and soak it all up!
I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day filled with family, fun and?barbecues.

Aiming for & incentivizing strict BP control for all patients means some are being over-treated -- but an individualized approach could help
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Aggressive efforts to lower blood pressure in people with diabetes are paying off perhaps too well, according to a new study
The research shows that there have been dramatic improvements in blood pressure control among patients with diabetes in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with as many as 82 percent of patients having blood pressure controlled and 94 percent getting appropriate BP treatment.
However, given the dramatic rise in control, as many people now may be getting over-treated with blood pressure medications as are being under-treated.
That suggests it might be time to reconsider the current one-size-fits-all approach to blood pressure control, and turn to a new model that adjusts the blood pressure goal according to the individual, say a team of researchers from the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the University of Michigan Health System.
Modern healthcare electronic record systems should help make this possible, they say, because blood pressure, prescription and other health data on individual risks such as heart disease or balance problems can all be combined.
In a paper being published online in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the team finds that over 8 percent of the 977,000 VA patients nationwide with diabetes are possibly being over-treated. Meanwhile, 6 percent were not being treated as aggressively as they could be.
"Appropriately treating blood pressure in people with diabetes is extremely important, and good blood pressure control should still be the goal to reduce risk of heart attack, stroke and other conditions," says first author Eve Kerr, M.D., director of the Center for Clinical Management Research at the VAAAHS and professor of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School.
"But just treating to a BP target in all patients may result in over-treating and harming some patients because their blood pressures actually fall too low," she adds. "We need to find better ways to measure and incentivize appropriate BP management to make sure that patients who need aggressive treatment are getting it, and to decrease the rate of inappropriate overtreatment."
The team looked back at electronic records from people with diabetes and high blood pressure who were treated at any of 879 VA hospitals and clinics in 2009 and 2010. Almost 714,000 of them were between the ages of 18 and 75. Drawing on the expertise of dozens of VA clinical and measurement experts, they developed a "clinical action measure", or way of assessing the appropriateness of a patient's care by looking at treatment factors and contraindications, not just the target blood pressure. They also defined a monitor of potential overtreatment, to signal that some patients could be receiving overly aggressive treatment.
Appropriate BP management was defined by the clinical action measure having a BP either less than 140/90 or less than 150/65; or having appropriate management of elevated blood pressure (medication intensification or being on 3 or more BP medications). Potential overtreatment was defined as having blood pressure that was less than 130/65 while also receiving three or more BP medicines or having recent medication increases. They focused on the patients under the age of 75 when assessing under-treatment, and all patients when looking for overtreatment.
Recent research has found that patients with diabetes don't have better cardiovascular outcomes, but experience more side effects, if they get aggressive treatment to lower their blood pressure under 130/80. At the same time, some people experience side effects caused by "polypharmacy", or the impact of taking multiple drugs at the same time for the same condition. In addition, diastolic blood pressure under 65 is associated with worse cardiovascular health, and low blood pressure could also cause dizziness that can lead to dangerous falls.
Interestingly, the rate of overtreatment varied considerably between VA facilities ranging as high as 20 percent at some and as low as 3 percent at others. The hospitals and clinics with the highest overall rates of diabetes patients with blood pressure at or below the target of 140/90 also had the highest rates of overtreatment, they found.
This is likely a result of focusing on a target than on an individualized approach a phenomenon that might be tied to performance incentives and public reporting practices currently in place, says Kerr, a member of the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center.
Such one-goal-for-all benchmarks were set years ago when blood pressure control for people with diabetes was poor across the board. But now, when 82 percent of VA patients with diabetes have their blood pressure under 140/90, a more sophisticated approach is likely needed, Kerr notes.
"We need to have performance measures that focus on appropriate treatment, and if patients are being treated aggressively but still don't quite get to a target control value we need to allow that to count as appropriate care," she says. As a first step, the VA system will adopt the BP clinical action measure to motivate appropriate BP management for patients based on their risks and treatment characteristics. But the same could be done in non-VA settings, especially those that have reached as high levels of BP control as has the VA healthcare system.
In the meantime, people who have diabetes should talk with their doctors about their blood pressure treatment and the lifestyle steps and medicines they are taking to keep it under control, Kerr says. "It is essential that we continue to monitor and focus on BP control among patients with diabetes, but we also have to realize that when BP starts to dip too low, it may be time to decrease treatment."

E a briga continua?

Cannabis fails to slow progress of multiple sclerosis in UK study
LONDON (Reuters) ? Cannabis capsules failed to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis in a large British study, dealing a blow to hopes that the drug could provide long-term benefits for patients with the debilitating nerve disease.
Despite promising signs in earlier, shorter studies, researchers found patients who took capsules containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a key active ingredient in cannabis, fared no better than those given a placebo.
The finding is a disappointment for researchers who thought cannabis might provide a viable therapy in the disease?s secondary progressive stage, when patients have few treatment options.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients were assessed in the trial known as CUPID (cannabinoid use in progressive inflammatory brain disease) on both a disability scale administered by neurologists and another based on their own reporting.
?Overall the study found no evidence to support an effect of THC on MS progression in either of the main outcomes,? researchers led by John Zajicek of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, Plymouth University, said.
Results from the study, which was funded by Britain?s Medical Research Council, will be presented at the Association of British Neurologists? annual meeting in Brighton later on Tuesday.
Cannabis contains more than 60 different cannabinoids, of which THC is thought to be the most active, and many MS patients have long said the drug helps them cope with the effects of the disease.
Drug companies, too, have been interested in cannabis as a medicine. Britain?s GW Pharmaceuticals, working with Bayer and Almirall, recently started selling an under-the-tongue cannabis spray called Sativex to relieve spasticity.
David Nutt, professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, who was not involved in the latest research, said the study?s failure did not mean cannabis had no role in helping MS patients.
?It would be wrong to interpret these preliminary findings to mean that cannabis does not achieve its licensed use. Cannabis is not licensed for limiting disease progression, it is licensed for dealing with spasticity and pain,? he said.
Zajicek?s study did find some evidence to suggest a beneficial effect in less disabled patients but because this was seen in only a small group of people it was unclear how strong the effect was.
The overall study population also experienced slower disease progression than had been expected, making it more challenging to detect any treatment effect, the research team added.
MS is a disease in which immune system cells destroy the myelin sheath that protects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
The most common type is relapsing remitting MS, affecting around 85 percent of patients at the time of diagnosis. Several drugs are available to treat this stage of the disease, including injections of beta-interferons and a new pill from Novartis called Gilenya.
Secondary progressive MS comes later and involves a sustained build up of disability.

A brand new luxury Chinese-built cruise ship proved to tall for a suspension bridge spanning the Oujiang River located in Wenzhou city, Zhejiang, China after just leaving the shipyard.? The newly-built US $44 million ?Mingzhu No. 7? cruise ship struck the bottom of the bridge Wednesday morning, shearing off two of the vessels funnels as well as causing some damage to the bridge.
The captain of the ship has apparently already admitted that he had forgot to take into account the high tide and lack of passengers and cargo when making his calculations.
The new ship was built to accommodate up to 1,000 passengers however did not have any onboard at the time.? The ships maiden voyage is set for October.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Thousands of people flocked to San Francisco's waterfront and onto Golden Gate Bridge on Sunday to celebrate the famous span's 75th birthday.
The daylong party attracted pleasure boats, tug boats and other vessels to the water as people on shore enjoyed a number of events stretching from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero. Many walked and biked across the bridge before capping the day by watching a fireworks display over the city's enduring symbol.
The bridge was shrouded in fog during part of the day, but skies were clear by nightfall for the 18 minute-long fireworks show.
"It's such an iconic structure, depending on the day or the hour, it just looks like it changes continuously," San Francisco resident Daniel Sutphin said as he walked through the Fort Point area with his wife and their three young children.
Since it opened in 1937, more than two-billion vehicles have crossed the 1.7-mile-long bridge named after the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance of water to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, and championed by engineer Joseph Strauss in the 1920s.
In a stark contrast to the thousands of celebrants, members of the group the Bridge Rail Foundation, an organization dedicated to stopping suicide jumps from the bridge, erected a display of 1,558 pairs of shoes, representing the number of people who died in leaps form the bridge since it opened in 1937.
"It's a symbol of how deep and serious this problem has been," said Paul Muller, a spokesman for the group. "We're still losing 30 to 35 a people a year off the bridge," he said.
Meanwhile on the water, Golden Gate ferries were running again after a one-day strike disrupted service across San Francisco Bay on Saturday.
Workers represented by the Inlandboatmen's Union walked off the job on a day strike, forcing the cancellation of ferries operated by Golden Gate between Larkspur, Sausalito and San Francisco.
The strike was called after nearly a year of negotiations over workloads and other matters, said Marina Secchitano, the union's regional director.
California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement Saturday evening, saying that he was appointing a board to investigate the strike, which, he claimed, created a disruption to public service.
Secchitano disputed the governor's claim, questioning the motivation to call for an investigation after a one-day strike. "(This is) an action to try to silence us," she said.
"They're counting on this process to back our membership off the issue," she said.
Service resumed Sunday when workers returned to work.

Small Business Web Hosting ? Your Ticket to Internet Marketing ...
While it is possible to create income streams through free web 2.0 properties, having your own domains and hosting can help you to build a customer base and encourage customer loyalty and trust. By having your own domain, your credibility and authority within a niche or market can be built much easier as well. Fortunately, setting up a web hosting account and getting your first site online is a simple process. In many ways, it is actually easier than creating many of the most popular web 2.0 properties available.
The first step is to find a domain name. Most web hosting providers will offer domain name registration services for any customer who is using their hosting services as well. This makes it easy to keep your information and projects organized. Just do a little keyword research and find the perfect domain name for the product or service you wish to market. This is often the most time-consuming aspect of starting an Internet marketing business.
With this taken care of, you can move on to a hosting plan. Depending on your intended marketing methods, you can often use a cheap shared hosting plan to start your ventures. If you are planning to use multiple videos or have a media intensive squeeze page, you might consider an upgraded plan from the start for increased performance and improved page loading times. However, regardless of the plan you with which you start, upgrading or downgrading your plan is often as simple as a quick phone call to customer service.
The next thing to consider is the content management system you wish to use for your site. Most major web hosting providers offer easy to use tools for installing many of the most popular content management systems, including WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. Each have their own feel and benefits. After choosing the appropriate content management system for your site, a few mouse clicks is all that is required to make your site. The only thing left is to create your content, generate traffic and watch the money start rolling in.
This is one of the biggest reasons why Internet marketing is so popular. With the low overhead and infinite flexibility, finding a successful market is only a matter of a little research, some time and a good web hosting company. Discounts and promotional deals are available through many of the largest web hosting providers. This makes finding a reliable, affordable web hosting provider simple.

Gov't taking new steps to combat food stamp fraud

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash ? sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist ? and then asking the government for replacement cards.
The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.
It is proposing new rules Thursday that would allow states to demand formal explanations from people who seek replacement cards more than three times a year. Those who don't comply can be denied further cards.
"Up to this point, the state's hands have been tied unless they absolutely suspected fraudulent activity," said Kevin Concannon, the department's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services.
Overall, food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year, or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Most fraud occurs when unscrupulous retailers allow customers to turn in their benefits cards for lesser amounts of cash. But USDA officials are also concerned about people selling or trading cards in the open market, including through websites.
Last year, the department sent letters urging eBay and Craigslist to notify customers that it's illegal to buy and sell food stamps. USDA officials followed up last month, saying they are still getting complaints that people are using the websites to illegally market food stamps.
Both eBay and Craigslist have told the government they are actively reviewing their sites for illegal activity and would take down ads offering food stamp benefits for cash. The USDA also has warned Facebook and Twitter about the practice.
South Dakota, Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Minnesota and Washington state have the highest percentage of recipients seeking four or more replacement cards over a year. But USDA officials said that doesn't necessarily indicate a high rate of fraud. All states are required by law to reissue lost or stolen cards to those who are eligible for benefits.
Wyoming, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Alabama have the lowest percentage of households requesting four or more cards in a 12-month period.
In North Carolina, the state already issues warning letters to people who request four replacement cards in a year, letting them know that officials are monitoring them closely. Dean Simpson, chief of economic family services for the North Carolina Division of Social Services, said the new rules would give her state even more of a boost in curbing food stamp fraud.
"I think it would help with the trafficking and let individuals know they are being observed and watched," said Simpson, who oversees the state's distribution of food stamps.
More than 46 million people receive food stamps, nearly half of them children. The average monthly benefit is $132 per person.
Benefit cards work like debit cards, allowing users to swipe them for food purchases at some 231,000 stores around the country that are authorized to take part in the food stamp program. Once a card is reported lost or stolen, it can be disabled immediately. But the USDA does not require photo identification, since several members of a family, including children, may use the cards at different times.
Concannon stressed that the USDA wants to be sensitive to vulnerable people who may lose their cards for innocent reasons. While it may sound suspicious for someone to lose a card two or three times a year, food stamp recipients include many people who are homeless or have dementia or mental illness, he said.
"Our concern is that in many instances, it may point to a trafficking issue," he said.
Last year, about 850,000 people were investigated for possible food stamp fraud. About 2,000 stores were sanctioned for illegal conduct, and 1,200 stores were permanently removed from the food stamp program.
Large supermarkets are seldom involved in illegal activity, Concannon said. The vast majority of fraud is found in smaller shops and convenience stores.
The USDA is currently developing tougher sanctions and penalties for retailers engaging in food stamp fraud. It is also taking steps to make sure that people disqualified from the program for illegal activity are not able to use it again in other states.

Chronic back pain has affected many people throughout the world. If a person is suffering from chronic back pain, then it needs to be cured on time or else it can lead to complications. Lumbar is the back support in the human anatomy that helps supporting the entire weight of the body. Due to constant wear and tear of the lumbar and several other factors, one can encounter back pains which may at times turn out to be extremely severe. A major reason for occurrence of chronic back pain is improper sitting posture in office or in home or just anywhere. Lumbar back support chairs can be used to get rid of chronic back pain. It is essential that in one?s car also, well sitting is required as one has to commute long distances for some work or some other purpose.
Lumber back support has been found as an excellent technique in providing firm support and has been rated as an effective means to get cured of severe back pain. The lumbar back support helps the spine and neck align in a correct manner so that the degree of stress and fatigue is drastically reduced on the person who is sitting. Research has said that a person in an improper posture, that is, not having a proper back support, has to have three times more strain than the person when he is standing. It becomes strenuous while sitting for a long duration. It is due to the fact that human body is not designed to sit for longer time. But the present lifestyle has made people to sit for longer time. That is why there has been an increase in the number of people who complain of severe back pain. It is important that the chair is adjusted according to one?s height.
Lumbar back support has cushions or rolls that one can place in one?s chair to support his back when one has to sit for a long time. Thus, while buying chairs, one should make sure that it consists of lumbar back support so that it lessens the strain on the back. It is necessary not to forgo health at any cost. One?s chronic back pain can be lessened by the usage of lumbar back support to a large extent. To slouch forward towards what they are concentrating on, is a natural tendency for most of the people when they are seated for a long time and this needs to be taken care of or the results can be drastic.
A good lumbar back support keeps one?s ears, shoulders and hips aligned which maintains the natural inward curvature of the lower spine. It keeps the spine in a natural position, not overly accentuating the inward curve and not leaving it totally unsupported either. Comfort can contribute enormously to one?s overall performance and productivity. While sitting in a good posture, body health greatly improves and one is bound to have less pain. Lumbar back support is the best thing to go for when one wants to be relieved from severe back pains.

Beginning of the end for internet anonymity?
If the bill passes, get ready to hand over your full name and home address
Anonymity is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the United States was founded, in part, thanks to Thomas Paine's anonymously written, pro-revolution pamphlet?Common Sense. On the other hand, 12-year-olds who post anonymously on the internet can be rather unpleasant and?cause real problems by cyberbullying. Whether you think the good outweighs the bad, this news is troubling indeed: A far-reaching bill introduced in the New York State Senate could end the practice of posting online once and for all.
Sen. Thomas F. O'Mara / NY SenateIntroduced by New York State?Sen. Thomas F. O'Mara (R?Big Flats),?S6779 would require that any anonymous post online is subject to removal if the poster refuses to post ? and verify ? their legal name, their?IP address,?and their home address. From the (likely well intentioned) bill:
"A web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate. All web site administrators shall have a contact number or e-mail address posted for such removal requests, clearly visible in any sections where comments are posted."
Critics are quick to point out how dangerous and ineffective the anti-privacy bill would be in the off chance that it somehow passes.? After all, IP addresses do nothing to verify a person's identity, and including your home address on a controversial internet post could open you up to real-life threats.
In effect, the bill is an?online stalker's dream. Of course, the most likely result of the bill's passage would just be the full-scale elimination of all comment systems everywhere, because the system is an unworkable burden on both the poster and the "web site administrators" who would need to respond to ludicrous take down requests at all times of the day.

Yahoo under Levinsohn seen shifting to content, advertising
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - With two of its most distracting conflicts resolved in the past week and a half, Yahoo Inc hopes its new interim chief executive can focus on the biggest challenge of all: turning the company into an entertainment and information destination that wins back the advertising dollars flowing elsewhere.
While ousted predecessors Scott Thompson and Carol Bartz were seen as technologists, Ross Levinsohn has managed Internet efforts at such mainstream media companies as CBS and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
Those close to Levinsohn said he is committed to building out Yahoo's own video programming and striking more syndication deals in pursuit of ads that command a higher price. In one sign that Yahoo is thinking of itself as more of a media company than a technology company, Levinsohn will continue to live in the Los Angeles area instead of decamping for the company's Silicon Valley headquarters, according to a source familiar with his plans.
"Levinsohn is a media guy, and our business model is selling display advertising," said another Yahoo insider. "His elevation makes clear we are a media company now."
Yahoo elevated Levinsohn on May 13 -- the same day it settled a dispute with Daniel Loeb, giving the activist investor three board seats. On Monday, Yahoo inked a deal to sell half of its stake in Alibaba Group back to the Chinese e-commerce giant for more than $7 billion, monetizing Yahoo's biggest asset after years of fractious talks.
Levinsohn, 48, declined interview requests but has told staffers to expect more on his strategy within weeks.
Longtime company insiders said that while Yahoo has a hard road ahead of it, the resolution of the two battles and Levinsohn's strength in advertising give the company a better chance than it had under Bartz or Thompson, with the latter resigning after Loeb revealed that he didn't have a claimed undergraduate degree in computer science.
CONTENT FOCUS
Industry executives and Yahoo investors said that Levinsohn has few viable alternatives other than reorienting Yahoo around media and advertising.
"When you have a turnaround situation, particularly an Internet turnaround situation, there are only a very few ways to solve the puzzle," said current News Corp Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller, who co-founded a venture capital firm with his friend Levinsohn six years ago. "In Yahoo's case, some of the slots you might think to take are already taken -- being a leader in the social space is taken, and being No. 1 in search is occupied. They aren't going to be the mobile platform."
"One of the things that is open and fits is digital media. I think it's the one (slot) that Yahoo has to occupy, and Ross has the background, the orientation and the skills to take the lead in that category."
Though generic display advertising has lost favor to search-based ads and other more interactive formats, it still generated $12.4 billion in U.S. industry revenue last year and should produce $15.4 billion in 2012, according to eMarketer analyst David Hallerman.
Yahoo's share of that has been slipping, however, as advertisers turn to Google, Facebook and others. Hallerman projected that Yahoo's display advertising share would decline to 9.1 percent this year from 10.8 percent in 2011.
Video ads are more promising. They made up only 6.3 percent of all U.S. online advertising dollars last year but are growing more than 50 percent yearly.
Therein lies the reason Levinsohn has been frantically inking new deals to show original content from ABC News and established Hollywood stars creators such as Tom Hanks and Ben Stiller. Yahoo now claims 21 of the 25 most-watched Web series, and in the first quarter eked out a 1 percent revenue increase, the first year-over-year gain since 2008.
"If you think of content creation in a line from the free user-generated stuff to the most expensive, like the Netflix content you pay for, Ross' vision is to move up as high as they can go on free and ad-supported, because scale matters," said one of Yahoo's largest shareholders, who declined to be identified because the investor does not speak publicly on holdings. "I think he's right about that."
Yahoo also wants to increase the audience at its other content sites, which include the No. 1 U.S. news, sports and finance pages on the Web.
LEVINSOHN'S PAST
Raised in suburban New Jersey, Levinson graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. and served as a young executive at media and tech properties including early search engine AltaVista and CBS SportsLine, where he was early to pick content aimed at fantasy sports league players.
Prior to his appointment at Yahoo, Levinsohn was best known as the man who brought a still-young MySpace to the attention of News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch, who spirited it away from the outstretched arms of rival media baron Sumner Redstone's Viacom.
Though the $580 million price was derided as exorbitant, Levinsohn soon negotiated an advertising pact with Google that guaranteed News Corp a minimum of $900 million over three years, bringing both instant profit and acclaim to Murdoch, who was heralded as the one old-school media mogul who understood new media.
But MySpace soon fell into an epic downward spiral that ended last year in a sale reportedly worth $35 million, about a third of a thousandth of what Facebook was worth when it went public Friday.
Levinsohn, for his part, was around for almost none of the MySpace collapse and gets little blame from former colleagues.
Levinsohn was strong enough at internal politics that he survived for six years amid the intrigue at Murdoch's court, but was disadvantaged because he reported to News Corp's then-Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin while MySpace founder Chris DeWolfe spoke directly to Murdoch, who became enamored with DeWolfe and his partner Tom Anderson, coming to see them as visionaries who could do no wrong.
With Murdoch's full support, DeWolfe and his team were able to successfully resist some changes Levinsohn wanted, and as innovation at MySpace stalled Levinsohn decided to leave News Corp, joining Miller at venture firm Velocity Interactive, known later as Fuse Capital.
Levinsohn wasn't as good at early-stage investing as he had hoped to be, said a third partner from Fuse, Keyur Patel. Only a few of the companies Fuse backed have been sold, and none have gone public.
"There were very high-risk deals," Patel said. "None of those companies were a big hit."
Former underlings said Levinsohn is slow to anger and has embraced the element of News Corp culture that prizes personal loyalty above short-term performance.
Since joining Yahoo in 2010, he has overseen the acquisition of one Fuse creation, advertising technology company 5 to 1, and brought aboard his friend and co-founder there, News Corp veteran James Heckman.
He also hired another News Corp survivor, Mickie Rosen, who went on to found a price-comparison service called Tecca, which Fuse also backed.
Just days into his new role, Levinsohn told employees that the well-regarded Rosen would assume responsibility for content and business deals.
In addition, he gave Rosen control of Yahoo's fledgling effort to handle consumer transactions, which his predecessor Thompson -- a former PayPal president -- had set up on its own.
Ever the diplomat, Levinsohn disparaged neither the initiative nor Thompson, even though the latter was seen internally as a destructive force.
"Commerce is a significant opportunity for growth," Levinsohn wrote to the troops. "In order to thrive it needs to be woven throughout the Yahoo experience and close to our major traffic drivers."
