5 churches + Museum of Rome + Refugee Observations

It's been an interesting, fast, and intense week. I'm a bit behind, but I'll briefly catch you all up to speed.

Tuesday:
1. Santa Pudenziana and Santa Prassede: some of the oldest churches in Rome; named after 2 daughters of Roman Senator Pudens who housed Peter in Rome; this was our first look at large Christian mosaics = notice a Christ-centered apse, 12 disciples flock of sheep, alpha & omega, and (my favorite) Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John portrayed as the man-angel, winged lion, bull, and eagle, respectively.

2. Santa Prassede: here we see the first concept of a relic, a tangential artifact, sometimes a body part, a cross, etc.
This is a relic of the column that Jesus was tied to when he was tortured.

3. Santa Maria Maggiore: such a large, gorgeous church; highest campanile in Rome, 1377

Museum of Rome:
After another big salad at Insalata Ricca, Jennie, Kristin, Crystal, and I ventured to the Museum of Rome. There were no English signs, so instead we had to read from laminated cards in each room.
-one of the most gorgeous staircases I've ever seen

-neatest ceilings ever

-a special exhibit: restoration and display of "The Resurrection of Lazarus" by Caravaggio

They used organic/inorganic chemical spectroscopy to determine the compounds in the art.

-public lecture at Rome Center by Professor Kasaba on Middle East
-night service at my church site, Santa Maria in Trastevere: hymns and prayers in Italian

-night jaunt to Vatican City and St. Peter's Square (aka where Pope blesses the people)

Wednesday:
-visit to market where lots of refugees shop and sell food/clothing

-anyone for eel??
-volunteering at the Refugee Center with Kristin, Sara, and Anna: this was a very powerful experience. We were assigned to color/draw with the refugees, men who have fled their countries of origin to come to Europe, but cannot find jobs/housing. Once we sat down and starting drawing on paper, they pretty much flocked over to us. They would write their name, and we would write our name. Then they would write our names in Arabic and teach us to say "how are you?" and "hello." The man I talked with the most was a mid-20s Afghani man who was told he cannot return to Afghanistan until one year has past. He misses his family, but became more interested in America and the fact I lived on a farm, etc. Another man drew me a picture of his home in Pakistan with the river and trees. Some of them are very artistically talented, while some have trouble speaking English or writing. We left that day with a stack of 30 or so pages among all four of us.
-spent all evening prepping for my presentation

Thursday:
-4. Santa Maria in Trastevere: my church presentation! It went very well.
-5. Santa Cecilia in Trastevere: the home of St. Cecilia, a matyr who was boiled and slashed to death, poor girl, because she refused to worship the Pagan gods. Our instructor Lauren completed her graduate school thesis on this artwork, so she had such a wealth of knowledge on their piece. So interesting. I bet some of you have seen this piece before in books, etc.

-I received a postcard from my Auntie Chrissy and Phil today from France!

Later today:
-homework
-Italy vs. Germany soccer game at a big Piazza where they're putting up a large screen for the masses

Tomorrow:

Spain ousts Portugal in PKs

Man of the Match: Sergio Ramos has always had the potential to be a world class center half, but having spent much of his career as a right back, the Real Madrid defender made his reputation on his ability to lock down the right flank. Today, he added another line to that resume, serving as clean up man against a Portuguese team that had a number of chances chances to flash their counterattacking prowess. Opta credits Ramos with a team-high seven clearances, five of them of the effective/influential variety. Ramos was also second on the team with 80 successful passes, hitting at an 89 percent clip.

Prematch, Vicente del Bosque threw us (and Portugal) a curve ball that never really broke. Despite not cracking the starting XI for any of Spain?s first four games, Sevilla?s Alvaro Negredo got the start at striker, relegating both Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas to the bench. Despite Spain going two hours in search of a goal, Torres never took his track suit off.
The logic? Perhaps the physically stronger Negredo would hold up better against bruising Portugal duo Pepe and Bruno Alves (Alves affirmed his bruising?tendencies?by four times going up and through the back of Spanish forwards ahead of aerial challenges).
There was one instance where the Negredo logic seemed to work. In the 29th minute, a long ball out of the defense found Negredo deep in the right of Portugal?s area. Holding up play, Negredo eventually found Xavi Hernandez, who played to the left to Andres Iniesta, who put a 16-yard shot out of play.
Portugal?s performance was the biggest reason Spain wasn?t able to better utilize Negredo. Implicitly disagreeing with the Blanc Doctrine (France?s coach implying Spain demands major adjustments because of the amount of time you?re without the ball), Paulo Bento?s surprisingly team played with more ambition than they did in the tournament opener against Germany (and, arguably, any opening 15 minutes this tournament).
They didn?t sit back. They came out and met Spain on the ball and only rarely allowed the holders? quick passing game to get through their line. At halftime, Portugal?s possession number was in the mid-40s and would finish at 43.
Another close number at halftime: Chances. Neither team had any. Spain saw a couple of Iniesta shots fail to test Rui Patricio, while Portugal?s best chances came from crosses eventually swallowed up by Iker Casillas.
This wasn?t your normal?No goals, no shots, but Spain has control, and it?s only a matter of time?game. Portugal was not only on even footing with the champions, but there was a feeling that the match was being played on their terms.
Perhaps that?s why del Bosque was the first to make major changes. Negredo was off ?in the 54th, giving way to Fabregas. Six minutes later, Jesus Navas came on for David Silva. The changes made Spain more dangerous, with Fabregas combining with Iniesta to start puncturing the Portuguese defense, but by the time Pedro Rodriguez came on for Xavi (80th minute), it was clear Spain needed more than just new personnel.
The big question: Xavi? Why was Xavi Hernandez coming off? Perhaps it was a fitness concern, with Vicente del Bosque skeptical his best playmaker could make it to minute 120. It?s just curious to see Silva (who?d had a decent game) and Xavi come off while Xabi Alonso ? who?d had little to meaningfully do ? stayed on. Why del Bosque can?t, no matter the scenario, get away from playing two deep-lying midfielders?
Portugal held off on their changes until late in the half before an obligatory substitution, bringing on Nelson Oliveira for Hugo Almeida. Just as in the first half, it seemed the half played out as they wanted, with a 90th minute chance for Cristiano Ronaldo?nearly sending Portugal through:
- Spain drew a foul 35 yards out on the left flank, the inswinging restart cleared out to Raul Meireles, who broke Portugal into the counter. He found Ronaldo on the left, who was able to set up an open chance for himself at 15 yards out. His left-footed shot was skied into the crowd, sending us to extra time.
After full time, Spain seemed to realize how close they were cutting things. Come minute 91, they took full control of the match. It wasn?t typical Spanish work you `til you wilt control. It was a more measured, deliberative response.
In the 104th minute, the approach paid off with the best chance of the match. Building down the left, Spain got to the line and cut a ball back to Iniesta, six yards out at the near post. He redirect was saved by Patricio.
By the time the second extra period started, Portugal had regressed into a much more passive stance. They were allowing Spain to keep the ball, more concerned about containing their opponents than regaining possession. For 15 minutes, we saw the match we had expected before kickoff.
Spain got one more chance before kicks. A throw-in down their left saw play move across the middle for Jesus Navas, who worked ?with Alvaro Arbeloa to break down the left side of Portugal?s defense. Eventually, Navas had a shot from 12 yards out to the right of goal, Patricio?s right hand blocking a ball headed far post.
Spain had five shots and created four chances in extra time. Portugal: Zero and zero.
Penalty kicks:
- Xabi Alonso went first, with a kick to the right of goal saved by Rui Patricio.
- Joao Moutinho, first for Portugal, had his shot to the left saved by Iker Casillas.
- Andres Iniesta was the first to score, going right after sending Patricio left. It was the only kick on which Patricio guessed wrong.
- Pepe pulled Portugal even, side-footing a ball inside the left post, beating a driving Casillas.
- Gerard Piqu? restored Spain?s lead, skipping a shot over Patricio, who had correctly guessed left post.
- Bruno Alves looked to go next, but Nani quickly came and took his spot, the order temporarily confused. Putting into the top-left of goal as Casillas dove right, Nani made it 2-2.
- Sergio Ramos chipped a ball high into the right of goal, over Patricio, putting Spain back in front: 3-2.
- Now it was Alves? turn, with Cristiano Ronaldo apparently set to do fifth. If Alves missed, however, Ronaldo may never get to kick. Going for power, Alves hit the cross bar, leaving Cesc Fabregas in control of the match.
- Fabregas nailed a perfect kick off the inside of the left post, leaving a moment?s doubt as to whether it would stay in. The ball rolled along the inside of goal, into the right side netting, by then well inside the goal. For the third time in a row, Patricio guessed right, but for the third time in a row, Spain scored, winning the shootout 4-2.
Though Spain was the slightly better team on the day, it wouldn?t have been unjust to see either team go through. But for Portugal to go out before Ronaldo kicked leaves a huge what if. It?s strange, because there?s no reason to think Alves wouldn?t have missed his kick had he gone fifth, but when you leave a tournament, you never want to feel like you could have done something else. Even if this something else is born from superstition, it?s still there.
Had Portugal won, Pepe would have been the clear Man of the Match. Mats Hummels? exploits have drawn more attention because (amazingly) he was still unknown to most before this tournament. He also is a more skilled than more central defenders and thus is more apt to open eyes. But Pepe has been the best defender of this competition, having given multiple dominant defensive performances. He remains in the discussion as the world?s best defender (when he?s on the field), a status Pepe re-affirmed on Wednesday.
Spain moves on to their third straight major tournament final having likely transcended their most difficult obstacle. True, Germany may be a better team than Portugal, but as we saw today, Portugal was a good stylistic match against Spain. But Spain survives, moves on, and now awaits the winner of tomorrow?s Germany-Italy showdown.

Sanctions on Iran: Implications for Energy Security

Next month, international economic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran will intensify dramatically. Although Iran has been the target of various U.S. and multilateral sanctions throughout most of the past three decades, the latest measures are the most severe in history. These actions have been credited with reviving Iran?s interest in negotiations with the world, but they have yet to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, and are creating new challenges for the international coalition that has sought to constrain Iran. They also pose new uncertainties for energy markets and the international economy at a precarious period in the global recovery and the U.S. presidential campaign.

On June 29, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host a discussion assessing the wide-ranging implications of the Iran sanctions regime and consider the prospects for a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III said the arrest of a former Baylor basketball player for allegedly trying to extort money from the Heisman Trophy winner is a good lesson for NFL rookies.

"There's vultures out there, people looking to climb on top of all your money," Griffin said Tuesday, taking a break from teaching football skills to kids during a Play 60 event at the Browns' training facility.

Griffin would not comment directly on the arrest of Richard Khamir Hurd, 25, who was arraigned Monday in federal court in Waco, Texas, for allegedly threatening to release "derogatory information" about Griffin unless he was paid a "substantial sum."

According to court documents, Hurd contacted a representative from a St. Louis agency last week, threatening to publicize information about a client unless he was paid. The representative is identified in documents only by the initials B.D.

Griffin's agent is St. Louis-based Ben Dogra. The documents don't name Griffin.

Griffin said his situation, which coincided with his participation in the league's four-day rookie symposium, is a perfect cautionary tale for young players transitioning into the pros. This week, the NFC's rookies have heard from players like Michael Vick and Adam "Pacman" Jones about their off-the-field problems.

"It's something I knew was coming," Griffin said, "and when you hear those guys (former NFL players) talk about being careful and keep your circle real small ? all those things come back to you when you hear about stuff like this. You've got to be careful with who you trust."

Griffin enjoys being around people, and the No. 2 overall draft pick said it can be challenging to keep private.

"There's a fine line between guarding yourself and being guarded," he said. "I think I do a pretty good job of guarding myself, even with this situation. It's just something unfortunate that happened so I think guys can learn. It's just something that everyone can learn from and just move on."

Hurd played basketball at Baylor as a walk-on, from the 2004-05 season through the 2007-08 season, after a high school career at Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland north of Houston, according to Baylor sports information. His brother, Lamar Hurd, also played at Heritage Christian and later at Oregon State.

CDC trying out free rapid AIDS test at drugstores

ATLANTA (AP) ? Would you go to a drugstore to get tested for AIDS?

Health officials want to know, and they've set up a pilot program to find out.

The $1.2 million program will offer free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

Drugstores now offer blood pressure checks, flu shots and a few other types of health services. Officials are hoping testing for the AIDS virus will become another routine service.

"By bringing HIV testing into pharmacies, we believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV," CDC's Dr. Kevin Fenton said in a statement. He oversees the agency's HIV prevention programs.

The tests are already available at seven places, and the CDC will soon pick 17 more locations.

The HIV test is a swab inside the mouth and takes about 20 minutes for a preliminary result. If the test is positive, customers will be referred to a local health department or other health-care providers for a blood test to confirm the results, counseling and treatment.

When the project ends next summer, CDC officials will analyze what worked well and what didn't, said Paul Weidle, the epidemiologist who is heading up the project.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, but as many as 20 percent of them don't know they carry the virus, according to the CDC. It can take a decade or more for an infection to cause symptoms and illness.

Since 2006, the CDC has recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 get tested at least once, not just those considered at highest risk: gay men and intravenous drug users.

On special occasions, health organizations have sent workers to some drugstores to offer HIV testing. This week, Walgreens ? the nation's largest chain of pharmacies ? is teaming with local health departments and AIDS groups to offer free HIV testing at stores in 20 cities.

But this CDC pilot program is different: It's an effort to train staff at the pharmacies to do the testing themselves, and perhaps make it a permanent service.

"I'm excited. It's such a new and novel thing for us," said Sarah Freedman, who manages a Walgreens in Washington, D.C., that is participating in the pilot program.

At her pharmacy, the testing is done in a private room. They've also taken steps to make sure that a customer can very quietly request the test. For example, they've put out stacks of special test request cards ? they look like business cards ? at George Washington University and other nearby businesses. Anyone seeking a test can simply hand the card to the clerk, she said.

Only three or four customers have gone through with a test in the first few weeks.

"We get a lot of questions," she said. "Usually they get the information and they go and sit on it and think about it."

There's a second Walgreens in Washington offering the test, as well as branches in Chicago and Lithonia, Ga. Other test sites: East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale, Md., Mike's Pharmacy in Oakland, Calif. and a federal Indian Health Service location in Billings, Mont.

Each of the locations will get enough tests to check 200 to 300 people.
