The Torchlight Parade

Argh. You know, every year I look forward to this. And nearly every year, it's spectacular and wonderful. Not this year. Due to some major pacing problems, it really sucked. I mean, the first guys (the SPD motorcycle drill team) came through and everything stopped - for nearly 20 minutes. Then everybody lurched forward and stopped again - for 15 minutes. It got so dull that I went to the Rite Aid and bought some wine without missing a single thing. Even when it got underway, there were still some weird stoppages. I was holding out for the dragon.

OK, there were some good balloons:
And the Leavenworth float was nice (note the lederhosen): As was the float from Sequim: Finally, after an hour and a half (most of which was spent waiting for stuff to happen), the dragon showed up: And then I left. From the sound of it, the parade went on for at least another hour. But honestly, in all my years of watching (and marching in) the parade, this was the worst. If you saw it, you know what I mean.

Best Ways To Do PPC Advertising In 2012 ? Tactics At Work | Get ...

If you have an Internet business, and you want to make money in 2012, PPC advertising might be the way to go. If you are new to this form of advertising, then maybe you know that Google Adwords really shook up their program several years ago. When it comes to affiliate products, it does not mean that you cannot do this.

Google frowns upon affiliate marketers for some reason, so you might be better off with a different network if affiliate products are what you are marketing. Strategies that work ? this should be your primary focus, the matter what PPC network you happen to go with. To cut your losses, it is always best to enter pay per click or PPC at a moderate pace.

Basically, for PPC to work, you?re going to target people that are ready to buy, not just looking around. Anyone that is ready to buy will always type in ?buying keyword phrases? ? this is how you will be able to make the sale.

By using these keywords, and using emotions or feelings in your advertising, you are sure to make some money for your efforts. Seems many people have a difficult time accepting that because they don?t want to believe it applies to them. Keep in mind that this strategy works regardless of who you are or what you are selling online. You will definitely become a believer after you apply the strategy to your PPC ads and start seeing the sales come in. If you want your advertisements to work, they must be a filter to some degree. You don?t want on targeted individuals clicking on your ads as this is a waste of money. When you use negative keywords, this will filter people who would otherwise click on your ads for no reason. The copy that you use in your ads should be laser targeted so that they are motivated to click. By doing this, only highly targeted traffic will click on your offers. What you need to do is practice integrating these strategies into your advertising efforts. If you practice them, they will become efficient and profitable for you. Actually having never done business offline can be helpful to you since your only exposure will be doing it online. Those who are experienced fully realize the net is a highly dynamic environment and much more than the offline, for the most part. So just remember that the climate can become very different, and you will have to adjust to it the best you can. Since we are covering information regarding business and other points, you have to maintain proper perspective. But ask your self the tough questions about longevity and any possibilities for future problems.

Anything new to you that seems to be a candidate for your business is worth testing, at least that much.

The trick to making money with PPC is to use buying keywords and phrases that will attract interested potential customers. Once you have enough of these keywords, make your PPC campaign live. When people see your PPC campaign, by using certain keywords, you can truly find people motivated by.

So when people see your ad, they will be motivated to purchase your product because of the sense of urgency you create with your words. You can do that in many ways, and then there is the scarcity effect. More than likely, you will lose customers if your scarcity is not real, but contrived just for the PPC ad. Always be honest!

Much information must be learned prior to using PPC on any platform and before creating any campaign. If you choose to use the smaller secondary engines, then be aware of click fraud. The smaller platforms have a reputation for higher amounts of fraud than Google or Bing/Yahoo. Depending upon which search engine you choose to use for a PPC network, remember that some of them convert better with different offers. Test and learn from the results you get and that is the best way to go.

'Syria is stronger': troops fight to regain ground in Aleppo

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Refugees flee as Syria clashes worsen

Residents are fleeing Syria's largest city, Aleppo, as fighting between rebels and government troops intensifies.

With thousands of refugees streaming across Syria's borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, Syrian government forces continued to pound the country's commercial capital, Aleppo in a bid to regain ground won by Free Syrian Army rebels.

The country's foreign minister, Walid al-Muallem, who has not been seen since the devastating bomb attack two weeks ago that killed four of President Bashar al-Assad's top security and defence officials, warned the rebel's big to seize control of Aleppo would fail.

Speaking on a state visit to Iran, the foreign minister described the 17-month long uprising that the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says has left as many as 20,000 dead, as nothing more than a conspiracy of armed terrorist groups serving the interests of Syria's neighbouring enemy, Israel.

?Today I tell you, Syria is stronger ?in less than a week they [the rebels] were defeated [in Damascus],? he said, predicting the same would happen in Aleppo, Reuters reported.

Rebels forces say they have so far been able to hold off the official army in the south-western Aleppo neighbourhood of Salaheddine, while fighting continues in other districts held by the Free Syria Army.

Terrified residents who have been in the firing line for the last week were fleeing the city, and local activists say up to 190 people were killed on Sunday, although that figure cannot be verified.

There are more than 150,000 Syrians registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, although it is understood the number of people who have fled the country is much higher.

Many are staying with relatives in neighbouring countries or delay registering with the UN until they run out food and other basics and are forced to seek assistance, the UN said.

So many have been flooding across the Syrian border into Jordan that it opened its first official camp on the weekend, with enough room for 10,000 refugees and the capacity to expand to 100,000.

Turkey already has several refugee camps for Syrians fleeing the increasingly violent uprising - many of them leaving the city of Aleppo, which is just 50 kilometres from the border - and the UN says it has plans to build two more camps with the capacity to hold a further 20,000 people as the refugee crisis worsens.

Romney talks Iran, eyes foreign policy kudos

White House hopeful Mitt Romney on Sunday held top-level talks in Israel about how to handle fears over Iran's nuclear ambitions, on a visit aimed at burnishing his foreign policy credentials.

"Like you, we are very concerned about the development of nuclear capabilities on the part of Iran and feel it is unacceptable for Iran to become a nuclear armed nation," Romney told reporters on meeting President Shimon Peres.

"The threat it would pose to Israel, the region and the world is incomparable and unacceptable."

The Republican challenger, who will face off against President Barack Obama in November's US election, flew in from Britain late on Saturday for a one-day visit expected to focus on Iran's nuclear programme, which Israel and much of the West believes is a covert bid to develop atomic weapons.

"Iran and its effort to become a nuclear-capable nation (is one) which I take with great seriousness, and look forward to chatting with you about further actions that we can take to dissuade Iran from their nuclear folly," Romney told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier on Sunday in remarks carried on Israeli public radio.

He also said the two could discuss "developments about the region" including in Syria and Egypt.

Netanyahu told him it was important to have "a strong and credible military threat" because sanctions and diplomacy "so far have not set back the Iranian programme by one iota."

"I think it's important to do everything in our power to prevent the Ayatollahs from possessing that capability," he said.

"And that's why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat, coupled with the sanctions, to have a chance to change that situation."

Romney was also to meet Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad later on Sunday and give a statement on foreign policy.

Romney has consistently attacked what he says is Obama's weak and misguided Middle East policy, saying in January that the Democratic incumbent "threw Israel under the bus," by defining the 1967 borders as a starting point for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

He has also charged that Obama's policy towards Iran is too weighted towards engagement with an Israeli enemy with suspected nuclear ambitions, and has vowed tougher sanctions if he is elected.

Obama made a show of support for Israel at the White House on Friday, signing a law reinforcing US security and military cooperation with Israel as representatives of the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC stood next to him in the Oval Office.

Israeli journalists were invited to attend the signing along with photographers and reporters accredited to the White House. Such signing ceremonies have been uncommon in the Obama presidency.

The law, which gives Israel preferential access to US arms and munitions, "underscores our unshakable commitment to Israel's security," Obama said.

Israel is widely believed to have the Middle East's only, albeit undeclared, nuclear arsenal, which international experts believe contains between 100 and 300 nuclear warheads.

On Sunday, Israeli daily Haaretz reported that US National Security Adviser Tom Donilon had briefed Netanyahu on Washington's contingency plans for a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Citing a senior US official, the paper said Donilon met Netanyahu for three hours over dinner in Jerusalem two weeks ago and shared with him details of US military capabilities for attacking Iranian bunkers.

"Donilon sought to make clear that the United States is seriously preparing for the possibility that negotiations will reach a dead end and military action will become necessary," Haaretz wrote.

Israeli officials did not formally confirm or deny the report.

"We don't comment on what is discussed in closed diplomatic meetings," one official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"But the story is full of factual errors."

US women overcome sloppy play, beat Croatia 81-56

LONDON (AP) ? Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a sloppy 81-56 victory over Croatia on Saturday in their Olympic opener.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping that the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the game internationally. That didn't happen Saturday as the U.S. struggled for the first three quarters before pulling away to win their 34th consecutive Olympic contest.

The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally could pull away.

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, only led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.? Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate?to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.? Heh.? Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today?at 4:00 p.m. (PST).? If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.? The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly?retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.? Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?? No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."? Stay tuned!

?

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight?next.? Who would you rather fight?? A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or?UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach?and has?murdered everyone put in front of him?? Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.? Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.? He was subsequently booted from the card.? But it's?a new day, and with this new day comes the?news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie)?that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.? Hooray!? If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and?beating people silly?is good for main events.

?

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.? Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.? Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.? There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.? Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

PAUL ON THE RUN: Sir Paul at graduation celebrations

www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Thursday, 26 July 2012

Sir Paul McCartney has led graduation celebrations at the "fame" school he set up in his home city.

Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (Lipa) opened in 1996 after a long campaign by the former Beatle.

Sir Paul, 70, was accompanied at the graduations for the first time by wife Nancy Shevell, 52, who he married in October last year.

Around 260 students from the UK and 15 other countries attended the ceremony alongside the music legend to collect their degree and postgraduate certificates.

Sir Paul also presented Lipa Companionships to Olivier Award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne and Grammy-nominated musician and music video director Kevin Godley.

Lipa companionships were also presented to production manager Jason Barnes, UK pantomime producer Michael Harrison, choreographer and creative director Gary Lloyd, sound engineer and sound designer Owen Lewis, and reminiscence arts pioneer Pam Schweitzer. The institute awards companionships for outstanding achievement and practical contribution to students' learning.

Lipa's founding principal and chief executive, Mark Featherstone-Witty, said: "This year, just shy of 200 practitioners contributed to our learning - a solid total for us in the provinces.

"No institution is better than its teachers. There's no substitute for learning from the best - people like Sir Paul, who answered students' questions. These generous professionals shared their knowledge, engaging all the disciplines we teach."

Lipa, located in the former Beatle's old school - the Liverpool Institute for Boys - was founded by Sir Paul and Mr Featherstone-Witty with the aim of providing the best teaching and learning for those who want to pursue a lasting career in the arts and entertainment industry.

Sony outs threechip PMW200 XDCAM with Android or iOS remote control

If you're the reporter and camera operator for K-STIX, Sony's got good news: they just unveiled the PMW-200 XDCAM, and you can control it with your smartphone. The camcorder features a broadcast-friendly 50Mbps data rate drawing from three half-inch CMOS sensors -- bigger than any other broadcast handheld cam, according to Sony -- though that size is still a far cry from its own super-35 filmmaking cams and others on the market. The Japanese company claims the chips provide "exceptional" low-light powers, and other features include 30fps at 1080P or 60fps at 720P, a 14x zoom lens, 3.5-inch 852 x 480 LCD display and a 15 second pre-record cache. The camera will be available by September, but the aforementioned WiFi adapter for Android or iOS remote control won't fly in until the end of the year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but if you need an easier way to multitask or the approving nod from that rigid broadcaster, check the PR for all the specs.

Google confirms it still has a 'small portion' of controversial Street View data, apologizes

It has seemed like Google was close to putting its Street View snooping controversy behind it a few times now, but one thing or another keeps bringing it back to the forefront. Today, it's an admission from Google that it hasn't deleted all of the so-called payload data in question after all. That revelation comes in a letter from Google Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleisher to Steve Eckersley, head of enforcement at the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (or ICO), in which Fleisher says that Google is still in possession of a "small portion of payload data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK." Fleisher adds that Google "apologizes for this error," and says that the data was discovered after an extensive review of its Street View data that it has been conducting in recent months. For its part, the ICO has acknowledged that it received the letter, and notes that the data was supposed to have been deleted in December of 2010, adding that "the fact that some of this information still exists appears to breach the undertaking to the ICO signed by Google in November 2010." You can find both statements in full at the ICO link below.

(AP) ? London, blow our minds.

The world city that needs no introduction but could do with an Olympic-sized pick-me-up in the midst of economic recession launches the 2012 Summer Games with a spectacular opening ceremony Friday that faces a unique challenge: to be as memorable as Beijing's planet-wowing, money-no-object extravaganza of 2008.

The British capital will set itself apart, as it has so often down the centuries, by being different. Beijing's curtain raiser featured 2,008 pounding drummers and a cauldron-lighter who seemed to float in the air of the Bird's Nest stadium. London will have 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese ? recruited by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle along with a cast and crew of 10,000 to present a quirky, humorous and vibrant vision of quintessential Britain, its history and future.

London is not the same as it was when the games were awarded seven years ago. Its serenity and confidence were shaken by riots last year and by terror bombings on the transport network that killed 56 people the day after the International Olympic Committee picked London over Paris in 2005. In London, the Olympic Games have come to a sprawling, historic metropolis that lives and breathes sports, with a population more global and diverse than perhaps any other, but which still feels it needs the Olympic spotlight to secure its future as one of the world's great cities.

In depicting Britain, warts and all, Boyle has drawn from William Shakespeare, British pop culture, literature and music, and other sources of inspiration that will speak not just to Anglophiles but to people across the globe. One segment involves actor Daniel Craig's James Bond, and former Beatle Paul McCartney will lead a sing-along.

Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" show will celebrate the green and pleasant land of meadows, farms, cottages, village cricket matches and bird song, but also dwell on Britain's darker industrial past. That's not a surprise from a movie director who depicted Scottish heroin addicts in "Trainspotting" and Indian poor in "Slumdog Millionaire."

As well as thousands of athletes and performers, some 60,000 spectators will pack the Olympic Stadium. Political leaders from around the world, U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty will also attend.

According to the Sunday Times, one section will feature characters from children's fiction classics including "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan" ? and a showdown between Lord Voldemort, the villain of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, and a horde of flying magical nannies based on Mary Poppins.

"I would have thought the difficulty is how you cram in all that is great about our country," British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday. "Whether it is sport, art, literature, history, contribution to world events, there are so many things to celebrate about our country that packing all that in to these hours must be a pretty tough task. But I am confident they have done a good job."

Many of juiciest and most significant details from the three-hour show, including the identity of the person or people who will light the Olympic cauldron ? if, indeed, there is one ? remain secret. That is, in itself, remarkable for the first social media Olympics, where the urge to tweet anything and everything is putting more scrutiny than ever on organizers and the 10,902 athletes from 204 countries.

Most will return home after 16 days of competition as they arrived: the pride of family and friends but still unknown to the wider public, unsung practitioners of sports ? think archery, synchronized swimming, wrestling and the like ? that get little attention for 206 weeks before blossoming in the two-week Olympic festival.

Medalists will be guaranteed recognition and perhaps fame and fortune for the luckier ones, especially the more than 300 who win gold. A hundredth of a second here, a centimeter there, in the pool or in the shooting gallery could make an athlete a household name. Their gold medals will be largest of any summer games and, at 400 grams (14 ounces), the heaviest, too.

Amputee runner Oscar Pistorius and women boxers will get headlines for being Olympic pioneers. But for other established stars who fail in quests to retain or win more Olympic titles, London will mark the end or the beginning of the end of their careers.

U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps insists these will be his last games. The 14-time gold medalist will go out with a bang, aiming to claim the unofficial title of greatest Olympian ever from Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina. She got 18 medals. Phelps has 16, and seven opportunities in London to overtake her. His rivalry with U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte promises one of the most compelling dramas of London. They will swim against each other twice: in medleys over 200 meters and, on the first full day of competition Saturday, over 400 meters in the Aquatics Center with its ceiling that slopes like the underbelly of a whale.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the other standout star from Beijing, wants to become a sports legend on a par with Jesse Owens, Pele or Muhammad Ali by retaining his Olympic titles in the 100, 200 and sprint relay. But the World's Fastest Man faces stiffer competition this time from countryman Yohan Blake and American rivals Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin.

In Beijing, the geopolitical significance of China's rise as a global superpower was as much the story as the sports. London, the first city to host the event a third time after previous games in 1908 and 1948, could in contrast be a purer Olympics, more about the athletes than the context. Could be more fun, too, without the backdrop of international concern over China's human rights record.

Big questions are how London's transport system will cope with millions of spectators and whether grumbling Britons will get behind their Olympics as they did for this year's celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The monarch will officially open the games at Friday's ceremony that will start at 9 p.m. with the sound of a 27-ton bell forged at the 442-year-old Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell.

Lavishing more than 9 billion pounds ($14 billion), triple the estimated cost when London secured the games in 2005, in the midst of severe economic storms in Britain and Europe has provoked pointed and persistent questions about whether the expense can be justified and whether the games will have a lasting positive impact for the host city and for Britain.

The most obvious legacy for London is Olympic Park, with the 80,000-capacity stadium that will host the opening ceremony and other new venues. It is built on formerly derelict, polluted industrial land in the east of the city that bore the brunt of bombing in World War II and, for centuries, concentrated London's stinkiest industries and its poor.

Other benefits from the July 27-Aug. 12 games, particularly the power of the Olympics to inspire kids to take up sports and to aim high, might not be obvious for years.

Facebook's stock tumbles after 1st public quarter

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's first earnings report as a public company had solid numbers, but in the end it landed with a thud ? much like its rocky initial public offering two months ago.

Facebook reported stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers Thursday. But investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, its stock fell more than 10 percent, or $2.74, to $24.10 in after-hours trading. The decline means Facebook's stock will most likely open at its lowest level since going public.

It's another big disappointment for the Harvard-born company that was supposed to usher in the next Internet boom.

"They didn't break any banks," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer. "They did not come out any better than anybody had expected."

What may have rattled investors is that Facebook's revenue growth has slowed. Between 2009 and 2010, the company's revenue nearly tripled. In the first quarter of this year, revenue climbed 44 percent. In the second quarter, Facebook Inc.'s revenue increased 32 percent to $1.18 billion from $895 million a year earlier. Analysts, on average had expected slightly lower revenue of $1.16 billion, according to FactSet.

For a freshly public company such as Facebook, the decelerating revenue growth is a concern. A bet on fast-growing revenue is the reason investors are willing to value new companies highly even if they are not making a profit. Another reason jittery investors may be even more nervous: Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, the number of people who access Facebook regularly inched closer to 1 billion. The company said it had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year earlier. At the end of the first quarter, it had 901 million users.

Overall the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company posted a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share in the April-June period, mainly due to compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago. The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

The results come two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq stock market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Though Facebook had a lot riding on its first public report, Wall Street's outlook was muted, which could be another reason for the stock's decline.

"People are waiting for a really huge growth moment in revenue, advertising, dollars per user," said Alex Ashby, research analyst at Global X Funds, a provider of a social media exchange-traded fund. "People had expected that Facebook is going to revolutionize advertising...we think it's still a definite possibility, but maybe further down the road."

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ?even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Fighting childhood cancer | Knoepfler Lab Stem Cell Blog - Burton ...

As a cancer researcher, the research in my lab applies to all human cancer, but I feel especially strongly about fighting childhood cancer.

One childhood experience in particular may have influenced me in this regard.

When I was about 13 some friends of the family had a baby. Let?s call her ?Suzy? (Not her real name of course). Everyone was really thrilled and excited for the new family.

Suzy was one in a million. Talking up a storm at age 3 and beginning to read even.

Suzy was also diagnosed with leukemia at age 3.

Despite the best efforts of medicine back then in the 1970s, Suzy pass away from the disease.

Somehow I really felt connected to Suzy even though she wasn?t a relative. I thought of her as a friend despite my being 10 years older. Part of it I think was because she was so engaging and an amazing talker despite being so young.

Her death was hard on me.

It was the first time in my life that I could remember that someone that I felt connected to had died. It was more than that. In my mind she was killed by the cancer. It was a realization my part of what the word ?cancer? meant.

At age 13, I wasn?t sure what I wanted to do with my life, being equally interested in many things, but especially science, medicine, and writing. As time went on, I?ve become more focused on biomedical sciences, but I still write a great deal including this blog.

However, my passion was science and especially cancer and cancer stem cell researcher.

I?ve spent most of my career in one form or another studying childhood cancers or key molecules that cause such cancers, particularly one called Myc. I?ve been honored over the years to have met a variety of cancer patients. I?ve also been fortunate to have my research supported by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a senior postdoc, a few years ago by the Brain Tumor Foundation to study primitive neuroectodermal tumors (which often, but no exclusively afflict children) and now via the St. Baldrick?s Foundation.

Having cancer is terrible and very unfair as ?I know first hand from my own experience that began in 2009, but it is especially horrible and unfair in my opinion when it happens to kids.

Not only is the disease a nightmare, but also the treatments are very harsh on the kids. Chemo, radiation, surgery?.sometimes all three. The kids and their families need our help and support including research.

Research is crucial for giving hope for the future. The reason why the prognosis for many kids with cancer today are far better than in the past is because of past research.

The cancer patients I meet are heroes, but even heroes need help and a team to have their back. It?s an honor to be a researcher helping kids battling cancer.

(AP) ? President John Atta Mills' election victory secured Ghana's reputation as one of the most stable democracies in West Africa, though his death Tuesday came before the 68-year-old could finish his first term in office.

Hours later, Vice President President John Mahama took the oath of office, further underscoring Ghana's stability in a region where the death of a leader can spark a coup attempt.

Ghanaian state-run television stations GTV and TV3 broke into their regular programming to announce the president's death Tuesday afternoon, which came three days after his 68th birthday.

Mahama was sworn in as president by 8:15 p.m., raising the golden staff of office above his head only six hours after Atta Mills' death.

Ghana had "been hit by an unprecedented tragedy" Mahama said, adding that the late leader "gave himself to bettering the lives of the people of this country."

Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman told the nation that Atta Mills had died at the 37th Military Hospital in Accra but gave no details about the cause. Rumors had swirled about his health after he made several trips to the United States in recent months.

"It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," Newman said.

On the streets of Cape Coast, 80 miles from Accra, people held radios to their ears on the street, listening to the funeral hymns playing on FM stations and waiting for more information about the president's unexpected death.

"His speeches were full of a spirit of love and peace," said Efua Mensima, 45. "He was soft-spoken. I wept when I heard of his death."

In a predominantly Ghanaian section of Ivory Coast's commercial capital, 10 men gathered just outside the home of Nour Ousmane Aladji, monitoring radio reports Tuesday night and trying to organize a bus to take them to Ghana for the president's funeral.

"The Ghanaian people were happy with this president and his program for the development of the country," said Aladji, 27, a taxi driver who moved to Abidjan in 2000. "Frankly, we liked him. Since his arrival everything he undertook was for the well-being of the country and his countrymen."

Chris Fomunyoh, the senior director for Africa for the Washington-based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, said that Ghana's democracy could weather the death of a president.

In other nations in West Africa, the death of a ruler usually spells a coup, as it did in neighboring Guinea following the 2008 death of longtime dictator Lansana Conte, and Togo, where the military seized power after the president's death in 2005 in order to install the leader's son.

"Ghanaian democracy has been tested and its institutions function well," said Fomunyoh. "There's no reason to think that Ghana and its democracy will not handle this event properly."

Ghana, whose economy has been fueled by gold, cocoa and timber exports in the past, hopes to put its oil money to good use, mindful of how nearby Nigeria suffered through military dictatorships and widespread corruption over its oil wealth.

Atta Mills was elected in a 2008 runoff vote that was the closest in the country's history ? and his third presidential bid. The election also marked the country's second successful handover of power from one legitimately elected leader to another.

He campaigned on a platform of change, arguing that the country's growth had not been felt in people's wallets.

"People are complaining. They're saying that their standard of living has deteriorated these past eight years," he told The Associated Press in 2008. "So if Ghana is a model of growth, it's not translating into something people can feel."

Seth Arthur, 29, who works at a hotel, said he voted for Atta Mills and believes he needed more time to fulfill his promises.

"He wasn't 100 percent successful though he tried. He tried."

Richard Downie, the deputy director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that Atta Mills may be remembered less for who he is or what he did, and more for what his election in 2008 symbolized.

He defeated the ruling party by the slimmest of margins, marking two successful handovers of power in Ghana, a benchmark used by political scientists to measure a mature democracy.

"It showed just how robust Ghana's democracy was, and it proved here in the U.S. what a success Ghana had become in terms of its political maturity," he said.

Atta Mills had traveled to the U.S. in March where he met with Obama, whose administration offered its condolences Tuesday.

"Our thoughts go to his family and to the people of Ghana who have a lost a beloved leader," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

Opposition newspapers had recently reported he was not well enough to run for a second term.

Last month when he went to the U.S., some radio stations reported that he was dead. When Atta Mills returned to Ghana, he jogged at the airport and blasted those who had reported his death

A government official in neighboring Ivory Coast said that he saw Atta Mills around six months ago in Ethiopia during an African Union meeting.

"We are hearing that he died of cancer of the throat. I saw him in Addis Ababa ? not this meeting, but the one maybe six months ago," said the official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. "He was walking slowly. I am surprised to learn that he is only 68. He looked much older."

Still, the official said no one suspected he was gravely ill. "Yes, his death is a surprise ? it's six months before the election, and he was a candidate."

He won the 2008 second round ballot capturing a razor-thin victory with 50.23 percent of the vote ? or 4,521,032 ballots. His opponent, Nana Akufo-Addo, garnered 49.77 percent ? or 4,480,446 votes.

Atta Mills also served as vice president under Jerry Rawlings, a coup leader who was later elected president by popular vote and surprised the world by stepping down after the 2000 vote.

Atta Mills spent much of his career teaching at the University of Ghana. He earned a doctorate from London's School of Oriental and African Studies before becoming a Fulbright scholar at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

2 Incredible Parenting Books

Ever just been in a funk? ?Yeah, me neither. ?Ha!

I?ve sort of been in a funk all summer. ?I think it all started when the crazy hit around here in March and situations we could not control began having a profound impact on our home, our family, and our attitudes. ?And it?s really hot. ?I mean record-breaking hot. ?I am a very grumpy hot person. ?

At any rate, somehow all this heat and grumpiness and funk has resulted in very little patience and grace with my girl. ?She?s 12, you know, and she?s good at it. ?We?ve got hormones and attitude and eye rolling in abundance around here. ?(Can I get a witness from another pre-teen momma?)

But I?m calling my attitude what it is: ?selfish and sinful. ??I realized I might need to get some input from some other parents to help me get back on track. ? So I spent a few hours skimming through a couple of my well-worn books on parenting and found some encouragement and wisdom (and a little bit of conviction).

best parenting books www.terilynneu.com

Grace-Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel. ?Oh. My. Word. ?I love this book ? and I wasn?t expecting to. ?It had been touted as a ?must read? by several people whose parenting philosophy was the total opposite of mine. ?I was prepared for a judgmental tome that legalistically required homeschooling, stay-home-daughtering, and daily family devotions as the sole path to a well-adjusted child. ?I was totally wrong! ?Here?s one of my favorite quotes:

Since how children turn out is far more contingent on what is going on inside them than outside them, unnecessarily tight boundaries undermine the desire of the Holy Spirit, who is working to build a sense of moral resolve in their hearts. (5)

Growing Great Kids by Kate Battistelli has been a challenging book for me this summer. ?When Kate graciously sent me a copy, I was so excited. ?After all, she has successfully raised an amazing only child ? and that is a very elite club! ?But her book humbled me. ?As I read page after page of Kate?s willingness to lay aside her own dreams and pursuits to give Francesca the very best opportunities they could, I was convicted of my own selfishness in parenting. ?And her words on our words as parents, well, let me just say, ?Ouch!?

What do your words say about your child? ?Are you speaking life or death to her dreams, desires, talents, and gifts? ?Belittling her or building her up? ?If God created the universe with a word, does it make sense then to believe there is creative power in our words as well? ? Words cost nothing, but they can change everything! ?(25-26)

My two takeaways from reading these past few days:

Emily makes her choice on 'Bachelorette' finale

Roman Francisco / ABC

By Natalie Zurawin, E! Online

Roses are red, violets are blue, there are two men left (and one rose), so whom will Emily Maynard choose??But seriously, who?! You may think you know, but really you have no idea....?

READ: "The Bachelorette" recap: and the last two men standing are....

Have you been strong enough to resist believing the rumored winner via recently leaked reportage? While we all love a little gossip, we refuse to believe it till we see it when it comes to "The Bachelorette."

By now Emily has brushed past the proverbial thorns and is ready to present the final rose. Except not really, because she is in love with two men at the same time!

Not only does she have to pick the right man for herself, but also for her daughter Ricki.

READ: "Bachelor" casting alert: Sean Lowe enters the mix!

Her parents and Ricki meet her in Curacao to help her make the right decision. Jef comes to meet them first.

Jef says to Emily's father, "I wouldn't feel right taking the next steps toward Emily and I being together if I didn't have your seal of approval, too.... I definitely want to have your blessing before asking Emily to marry me at the end of this." Her pops happily gives him the seal of approval.

Her brother is skeptical of Arie at first, but they connected over caring for children. However, he gave her family a box full of the roses that he received each week from Emily as a symbol of their relationship. Arie also asks Emily's dad for her hand in marriage. Pops says "yes" to Arie, too!

Thanks for the help, dad. Not. Then her mom steps in and advises her to not accept any engagements right away until she is absolutely sure of her feelings.

Initially, Emily was not planning on introducing her daughter to the suitors, but after Jef and she had a heart-to-heart on the beach she suddenly changed her mind.

He was so ready to meet Ricki that he jumped in feet first. Literally. The three of them played in the pool, and then set a hermit crab free into the sandy beaches.

Although things went swimmingly with Jef over the past few days, it seems Emily feels more lost than ever. She meets with Chris Harrison to get some advice. However, she reveals that she feels more strongly for one of the men, so Chris tells her, "Be as honest with him as you are being with me."

On her date with Arie, he anoints her with a love potion he made for her, and then she breaks into tears. Maybe he forgot to add the love.

In a shocking twist, Emily breaks up with Arie right then and there. You could actually hear his heart break pounding when she hugs him goodbye because her microphone hits his chest.

Meanwhile we see Jef picking out an engagement ring with the one and only Neil Lane. Do you think she will end up accepting his proposal?

With a perfect ring picked out and an even more perfect romantic moment complete with an '80s song montage. She said yes!

But wait, there's more! More secrets are being revealed on a live episode of After the Final Rose.

Chris sits down with Emily, and without hesitation they bring Arie out to reunite with Emily for the first time. For not getting any closure, he talks very positively about the experience. She apologizes again for not fully communicating her true feelings at the time.

Arie confesses that he could not go out in public and be himself after the show ended. He was so heartbroken that he flew out to North Carolina to talk with Emily. He simply left his journal on her doorstep that he wrote during the show.

Although she did not read it out of respect, she expresses that she admires his open heart and genuine love for giving her such a romantic gift. He wishes she would have been more honest with her, but his friendship with Jef helped him move on and still be happy for the couple.

RELATED: "The Bachelorette" recap: Who does Emily Maynard tell to "get the (bleep) out"?

When Jef comes out, all he can do is gush about how much he loves Emily and Ricki. All together now, "Awww."

So what's next for the ridiculously attractive couple? First stop: A humanitarian trip to Africa to build water wells. As for where they will build their lives together as they prepare for their wedding? (Yes, the wedding is actually happening.) They will settle down in North Carolina so that Ricki can stay at her current school.

And they say fairy tales don't come true.

Mazel tov y'all!

Do you think Emily made the right choice? Engage your comments over on Facebook!?

The Origins Of Feminism . - Small Business Branding

As is well known on our planet since ancient times and still reigns patriarchy. For many centuries, women are on the minor roles compared with men. She was deprived of many rights, could not get an education without could participate in elections. Men banned from women's active lifestyle, set in a financially dependent on you. Most of the differences between men and women associated with the millennial conditioning. Women mind is depressed man who made her his slave, turned it into a secondary citizen in the world. He knows that she is beautiful, it knows that its independence is a threat to him. had to wear a burqa and hide your face so that no one but her husband could not see the beauty of their faces, the depth of their eyes. You may find that Elmira can contribute to your knowledge.

In Hinduism, a woman should die after her husband. What a great zeal! He owned it all my life, but even after his death, he wants to possess her. After the death of anything can happen. She can find another partner, perhaps even more worthy than he. And what happened in Europe during the Middle Ages. This refers to the "holy" Inquisition, with its "witch hunt". They condemned the word "witch", and that's one of the revered words. This word simply means "witch" - a wise woman.

It comes from the word "Veda", ie, to "know". But in the Middle Ages, Christianity was confronted with danger. It turned out that thousands of Women were much wiser than the bishops, cardinals and the Pope.
