Drought-fueled wildfires rage in New Mexico, California

SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - A trio of drought-fueled wildfires burned out of control in New Mexico and California on Sunday as shifting winds and other adverse weather conditions hampered fire-fighting efforts, authorities said.

The Powerhouse wildfire in California's Lake Hughes area, 65 miles north of Los Angeles, had destroyed six houses, said Ronald Ashdale, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.

It was threatening more than 1,000 homes and had already charred 19,500 acres, the Forest Service said, adding that the blaze was not expected to be contained before Wednesday.

High temperatures and dramatic wind shifts have contributed to the fire, according to Ashdale, who said as many as 975 firefighters and other personnel had been struggling to contain the blaze in an area as dry as a tinderbox.

In New Mexico, two other fires also raged out of control on Sunday, one of them consuming 7,476 acres 2,800 (ha) of Ponderosa pine forest in an area known as the Pecos Wilderness, authorities said.

It too was fed by severe drought conditions blanketing 98 percent of the state, weather officials said.

"This is a historic drought. We haven't seen a drought like this since the 1950s," said Dan Ware of New Mexico's State Forestry agency.

Smoke advisories were sent to residents throughout the state after smoke and falling ash filled the air over Santa Fe and neighboring areas.

The other New Mexico fire had consumed 1,745 acres of the Valles Caldera National Preserve by late Sunday, triggering the evacuation of about 50 families, fire officials said.

UK envoy says BP committed to Algeria after attack

Algiers, ALGERIA (AP) ? The British ambassador to Algeria says oil and gas giant BP is committed to the country despite delaying two projects after the January terrorist attack on a gas installation that left 37 hostages and 29 militants dead.

The ambassador, Martyn Roper, said there had been "misunderstandings" after the BP chief executive, Bob Dudley, said in early May that the projects in In Amenas and In Salah would be pushed back.

Roper says "BP will stay in Algeria. It is very engaged and will pursue these projects."

Dudley also has said the company will continue energy exploration activities in Algeria.

Spanish Social Gaming Startup Akamon Lands $3.6 Million

Looks like Barcelona is becoming something of a hotbed for social gaming companies, with the likes of King and Digital Chocolate setting up studios in the city, and local players like Social Point making a killing the space.

Enter Akamon, another multi-platform social gaming startup that was born in Barcelona, which is today announcing its first round of investment.

The company has raised 2.8 million euros (a little over $3.6 million), most of which ? 2,250,000 euros to be precise ? came from Axon Partners Group and Bonsai Venture Capital.

The rest of the fresh capital ? 550,000 euros to be precise ? was injected by Exelweiss, Grupo ITnet and Vicen? Mart?, CEO of Akamon.

Akamon offers online social and casino games via its own websites and those of its partners, Facebook and mobile devices.

It says it will use the money raised primarily to ramp up marketing efforts across southern Europe and Latin America, the recruitment of new team members and expansion into new markets.

Akamon currently has a total of 70 employees and plans to hire another 20 before the end of this year. The company says it closed last year with revenues of $8.5 million ? and a positive EBITDA ? and expects to end 2013 with almost double that ($16 million).

Megyn Kelly Vs. Erick Erickson, Lou Dobbs - Business Insider

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly just conducted a heated interview with colleagues Erick Erickson and Lou Dobbs over recent controversial comments the pair made about women's roles as family "breadwinners."

While discussing a recent study that showed?40 percent of American households with children have female breadwinners on Wednesday, Erickson called it "anti-science" for men not to play a "dominant" role in a family.?

It was something to which Kelly clearly objected when she brought the pair on Friday afternoon.

"I was offended by your piece," Kelly told Erickson, adding that she was not an "emo liberal" that Erickson subsequently called out while addressing criticism of his comments.

"Just because you have people who agree with you doesn't mean it's not offensive."

In the video below, perhaps the most cringeworthy part comes around the 56-second mark, when Kelly challenges Dobbs over his comments attributing women's role in the workplace to marriages "shattering" in society.

"Why are you attributing that to women in the workforce?" Kelly said, interjecting.

"Excuse me. Let me just finish what I was saying, if I may,?oh dominant one," Dobbs said.?

"Excuse me?" Kelly said.
