Sgt. Justin Griffith took up Fort Bragg, Texas, officials on their promise not to discriminate on on-base activities after a 2010 concert and festival organized by evangelical Christians.
By Kari Huus, msnbc.com
After a sometimes painful 18 months of gestation, Sgt. Justin Griffith of Fort Bragg, N.C., exclaims,?"My baby is about to be born!" His baby is Rock Beyond Belief, apparently the first major atheist event on a U.S. military base.
Griffith, 29, who has served five years in the Army, including two deployments to Iraq, has been wrestling with the overwhelmingly Christian establishment in the Army since September 2010 to get to this point.
The March 31 event is Griffith?s answer to Rock the Fort ? a day-long evangelical Christian concert and festival held at Fort Bragg on Sept. 25, 2010, put on by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, with the support and blessing of the military brass. It was the fourth in a series of events sponsored? by the group on various U.S. bases dating to 2009.
Griffith is most proud that the event has garnered the same material support from the military that it gave the evangelical Christian event. This week, he announced that he had secured a commitment for the U.S. Army Golden Knights ? an elite skydiving team ? to perform in the festival,?despite the reluctance of some of the team?s Christian members.
"We asked for apples-to-apples treatment to the (Christian) event," said Griffith. "We fought for it. I won. I think (Fort Bragg leadership) won too because they did the right thing."
Griffith, who describes himself as a hardcore atheist, said he loves the Army, but he is constantly chafing at prayers ? Christian, or non-specific invocations?? that routinely are included in military ceremonies. But the Rock the Fort concert and festival spurred him to action.
"They bragged that they got hundreds of soldiers ?? to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior," said Griffith of the concert-festival series. "That is unacceptable. The chaplain?s job is not to grow their flock, it?s their job to take tend to the existing flock."
Griffith was the most outspoken critic of the event on the base, though a number of groups ? Freedom from Religion Foundation, American United for the Separation of Church and State and others ? said the event violated the constitutional separation of church and state.
Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick who leads the 13th Airborne Corps responded by saying that soldiers were not pressured to attend the event, and assured critics that he would provide the same opportunity to non-Christian groups that wanted to host similar events, according to a USA Today report?at the time.?Garrison Commander Stephen Sicinski provided a similar guarantee in writing, Griffith said.
So Griffith started planning Rock Beyond Belief. The process was bumpy?? and bureaucratic ? but the event was eventually approved for April 2011.
But when he learned that the forum set aside for the event would hold only a few hundred people?? "a broom closet" in his estimation ? he canceled it. Arguing that Dawkins, a noted genetics scientist and atheist celebrity, alone routinely pulls much larger crowds than that, he reapplied for a bigger venue this year, and won approval for the March 31 gathering, a year later.
Rock Beyond Belief has drawn some fierce criticism. Army Chaplain Chuck Williams, for example, posted an open letter?on Fort Bragg?s Facebook page calling for cancelation of the event, which he contended is being held only "to secure a public, government-owned venue to ridicule, mock and disparage those of our fellow Soldiers and family members who do profess a faith in God."
He also wrote that "part of this event will be glorifying violence against people who possess a faith in God through the burning of churches," a reference to lyrics from a song by Aiden.?"This is appalling!"
Griffith blames a Fox News commentary by Todd Starnes for the furor, charging that he misunderstood the lyrics, which were satirical.?The band?s lead singer wrote that the song ?Hysteria? was actually a condemnation of faith-on-faith violence and hatred.
Although the event appears set to go forward, the debate continues. Griffith said he has received "bizarre death threats," but he also feels the conversation is changing, and putting Fort Bragg in a new light.
"I?m so proud of Fort Bragg and this is not supposed to be a black eye to them," he said. "These little corrections are important, and the Army deserves them. I want to know if I have crumbs on my face. That?s what this is. If it?s a big deal it?s only temporarily a big deal."

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Experimenting with cells in culture, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have breathed possible new life into two drugs once considered too toxic for human cancer treatment. The drugs, azacitidine (AZA) and decitabine (DAC), are epigenetic-targeted drugs and work to correct cancer-causing alterations that modify DNA.
The researchers said the drugs also were found to take aim at a small but dangerous subpopulation of self-renewing cells, sometimes referred to as cancer stem cells, which evade most cancer drugs and cause recurrence and spread.
In a report published in the March 20, 2012, issue of Cancer Cell, the Johns Hopkins team said their study provides evidence that low doses of the drugs tested on cell cultures cause antitumor responses in breast, lung, and colon cancers.
Conventional chemotherapy agents work by indiscriminately poisoning and killing rapidly-dividing cells, including cancer cells, by damaging cellular machinery and DNA. "In contrast, low doses of AZA and DAC may re-activate genes that stop cancer growth without causing immediate cell-killing or DNA damage," says Stephen Baylin, M.D., Ludwig Professor of Oncology and deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
Many cancer experts had abandoned AZA and DAC for the treatment of common cancers, according to the researchers, because they are toxic to normal cells at standard high doses, and there was little research showing how they might work for cancer in general. Baylin and his colleague Cynthia Zahnow, Ph.D., decided to take another look at the drugs after low doses of the drugs showed a benefit in patients with a pre-leukemic disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Johns Hopkins investigators also showed benefit of low doses of the drugs in tests with a small number of advanced lung cancer patients. "This is contrary to the way we usually do things in cancer research," says Baylin, noting that "typically, we start in the laboratory and progress to clinical trials. In this case, we saw results in clinical trials that made us go back to the laboratory to figure out how to move the therapy forward."
For the research, Baylin and Zahnow's team worked with leukemia, breast, and other cancer cell lines and human tumor samples using the lowest possible doses that were effective against the cancers. In all, the investigators studied six leukemia cell lines, seven leukemia patient samples, three breast cancer cell lines, seven breast tumor samples (including four samples of tumors that had spread to the lung), one lung cancer tumor sample, and one colon cancer tumor sample. The team treated cell lines and tumor cells with low-dose AZA and DAC in culture for three days and allowed the drug-treated cells to rest for a week. Treated cells and tumor samples were then transplanted into mice where the researchers observed continued antitumor responses for up to 20 weeks. This extended response was in line with observations in some MDS patients who continued to have anticancer effects long after stopping the drug.
The low-dose therapy reversed cancer cell gene pathways, including those controlling cell cycle, cell repair, cell maturation, cell differentiation, immune cell interaction, and cell death. Effects varied among individual tumor cells, but the scientists generally saw that cancer cells reverted to a more normal state and eventually died. These results were caused, in part, by alteration of the epigenetic, or chemical environment, of DNA. Epigenetic activities turn on certain genes and block others, says Zahnow, assistant professor of oncology and the Evelyn Grolman Glick Scholar at Johns Hopkins.
The research team also tested AZA and DAC's effect on a type of metastatic breast cancer cell thought to drive cancer growth and resist standard therapies. Metastatic cells are difficult to study in standard laboratory tumor models, because they tend to break away from the original tumor and float around in blood and lymph fluids. The Johns Hopkins team re-created the metastatic stem cells' environment, allowing them to grow as floating spheres. "These cells were growing well as spheres in suspension, but when we treated the cells with AZA, both the size and number of spheres were dramatically reduced," says Zahnow.
The precise mechanism of how the drugs work is the focus of ongoing studies by Baylin and his team. "Our findings match evidence from recent clinical trials suggesting that the drugs shrink tumors more slowly over time as they repair altered mechanisms in cells and genes return to normal function and the cells may eventually die," says Baylin.
The results of clinical trials in lung cancer, led by Johns Hopkins' Charles Rudin, M.D., and published late last year in Cancer Discovery, also indicate that the drugs make tumors more responsive to standard anticancer drug treatment. This means, they say, that the drugs could become part of a combined treatment approach rather than a stand-alone therapy and as part of personalized approaches in patients whose cancers fit specific epigenetic and genetic profiles.
Low doses of both drugs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of MDS and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). Clinical trials in breast and lung cancer have begun in patients with advanced disease, and trials in colon cancer are planned.
In addition to Baylin and Zahnow, other investigators participating in this study include Hsing-Chen Tsai, Huili Li, Leander Van Neste, Yi Cai, Carine Robert, Feyruz V. Rassool, James J. Shin, Kirsten M. Harbom, Robert Beaty, Emmanouil Pappou, James Harris, Ray-Whay Chiu Yen, Nita Ahuja, Malcolm V. Brock, Vered Stearns, David Feller-Kopman, Lonny B. Yarmus, Yi-Chun Lin, Alana L. Welm, Jean-Pierre Issa, Il Minn, William Matsui, Yoon-Young Jang, and Saul J. Sharkis.

My trip to Austin last week provided a great opportunity to collect bacteria. I?ve been interested in the microbiome for a while, and since my Synthetic Aesthetics residency in 2010 I?ve been especially interested in the bacteria on skin and in cheese. The continuation of the project is up online now at bacterially.org, where we?re displaying the bacteria collected from 71 people at SXSW (a feat that would have been impossible without the help of Austin-based science communicators Lindsay Patterson and Joe Hanson?thanks!!!).
The donations came from many different body parts, giving us the opportunity to look at differences not only between different people but between different regions of the body. Some of the most attractive and diverse plates come from toe swabs:
I?m still analyzing and organizing the data, but right now you can see all the plates sorted by body part of origin here. This is a work in progress, so let me know in the comments what you?d like to know more about as I dig deeper into the samples!

Without a doubt, outsourcing is very popular among businesses because of the benefits that one can gain from it. Outsourcing companies have been very active in seeking new clients as they take advantage of the situation where the benefits of outsourcing is already out there in the open. As both non-voice and voice solutions gain popularity in different key outsourcing destinations, there is a question that enters the minds of those who have been monitoring the outsourcing industry; the question being ?Do businesses really get to maximize their outsourcing partnership with a strategic solutions provider??
We have previously written an article entitled ?How to Maximize Your Outsourcing Partnership? that provides tips on how a business can move past the barriers that could be encountered when engaging with an outsourcing partner. The article points out three key points: 1.) Keep it Clear, 2.) Set the Bar, and lastly 3.) Be Hands-on. We may have overlooked to include one other key point in the previous article, which is to seek the services of an outsourcing solutions provider that is trusted and preferred by many. Having a trusted outsourcing partner by your side would enable you to drive your business towards your goal without having to be troubled by the demands of your operations team.
There was study that was conducted by Accenture (NYSE:ACN) during the months of September and October in the previous year that suggests only 20 percent of the 263 buyers that was surveyed for the study is able to recognize the full value of their partnership with a business process outsourcing company. This is not an unusual case as most companies are only focused on cost reductions and are unaware of the necessary management and transition processes. In the study, 8 characteristics have been pointed out by Accenture that are common among the 20 percent who have already realized the full potential that is brought by outsourcing. Among these would be focusing on the benefits beyond cost reductions. Outsourcing could bring to your business a wide range of benefits that you can get when you partner with a solutions provider. Another is that high performers in the business process outsourcing industry have already established and adopted an approach towards management and governance processes. Although it is the objective of the partnership established between parties to get the job done, there are still key areas that need to be maintained in order for them to look forward to that contract renewal.
Outsourcing may appear to be quite simple; it is actually simple but only if you have been doing it for a long time already. There is a lot to learn about outsourcing that does not come in a manual which is why it is important for a business to first assess their needs and their potential partners. Outsourcing companies that are serious and dedicated about what they do would definitely help you along the way, allowing you to fully realize the value of outsourcing and create a sound outsourcing environment for you.

You may be surprised to find out that your homeowner?s insurance does not cover certain natural disasters. For instance, standard homeowner?s insurance policies do not provide coverage for loss or damages resulting from a <a href=?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood? title=?Flood?>flood</a>. In order to obtain this coverage, you will have to purchase a separate <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policy.
Doing so is wise, especially if you live in a floodplain. That said, not all losses or damages resulting from a flood are covered, even in a <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policy. Let?s discuss what is typically covered in a standard flood insurance policy.
Structural damages and generally covered. This means that damage to your walls and foundations are covered. Structural damage clauses also include electrical systems, plumbing systems, and central air, and heating systems. Carpeting, cabinets, drywall, and flooring are generally included, as are many large appliances. In additional, this section of a standard flood insurance policy will also cover the removal of debris.
Personal property loss is also typically covered in <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policies. This includes items such as clothing and furniture, along with valuables such as jewelry or artwork. Household electronics such as computers, stereos, and handheld devices are typically covered. Often food that is rendered inedible is also included in coverage. Of course, all of this coverage only reaches to the monetary limits outlined within the policy.

John Henry Browne, the attorney who defended Ted Bundy and the so-called Barefoot Bandit, talks to TODAY's Matt Lauer about his possible defense strategy, saying a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) defense is likely, and says there's a significant amount of misinformation about his client circulating.
By msnbc.com staff and NBC News
Updated at 9:54 a.m. ET: The case against the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers is "more political than legal" and the defense will likely focus on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), his lawyer told NBC News on Friday.
Attorney John Henry Browne, who is representing the soldier, said the suspect?had been training to become a military recruiter after three tours of duty in Iraq but had been ordered to return to Afghanistan "overnight."
?"There will be efforts to paint him as a rogue soldier rather than focusing on how we treat GIs in general or whether we should be over there to begin with," he told TODAY?s Matt Lauer in an exclusive interview.
The soldier was "en route" to the military prison in Levenworth, Kansas, U.S. officials told NBC News on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Friday accused the United States of failing to fully cooperate with an investigation into the massacre and questioned whether only one soldier could have been involved.
A series of blunders by the United States, including the killings in Kandahar province on Sunday and the inadvertent burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base last month, has further strained already tense relations between the countries.
New details have emerged about the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 civilians, including nine children, during a shooting spree in Afghanistan. NBC's Richard Engel reports.
Browne told Lauer reports that the staff sergeant had been suffering marital problems were "absolutely not true" and "offensive," adding the soldier has "a very strong and loving relationship with his wife."
He added that he would not be naming his client until the U.S. government formally released the man's identity. ?"I?ve been told by the government... that there is a great deal of security concern and I will go along with that until the government reveals his identity... not only concern for him but his family," Browne said.
?Browne also told The Associated Press that?his client saw his friend's leg blown off the day before the rampage. Browne said that according to his client's family, he was standing next to another U.S. soldier when that soldier was gravely injured.
Browne?said?the?suspect had suffered a "concussive head injury" concussion and lost part of his foot during deployments to Iraq.
The lawyer, who has previously defended serial killer?Ted Bundy, told?TODAY that the soldier had been screened for PTSD after the head injury and been cleared, but characterized the testing as "minimal".
Browne?also?said that the suspect had not confessed, adding: "He wasn?t exactly sure of the facts, which raises some question in my mind about his state of mind."
'He just snapped'
Earlier,?the New York Times?reported that a senior American official as saying the suspect had been drinking alcohol the night of the massacre?and was suffering from the stress of a fourth combat tour and tension with his wife.
?When it all comes out, it will be a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues ? he just snapped,? the official said, according to the Times. The newspaper said the official had been briefed on the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity because the soldier has not been formally charged.
Browne told NBC News alcohol was "maybe" involved but said it was not clear if this was the case.
The military was move him to a prison in the United States as early as Friday, most likely to Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

The suspect had been flown to a detention site in Kuwait on Thursday.?However,?the Times said the official said that there was a diplomatic uproar when Kuwait learned from news reports that the soldier had arrived at an American base there. The official said that "the Kuwaitis blew a gasket and wanted him out of there.?
The Times said the official's account had been confirmed by a senior official at the Pentagon.
At a news conference on Thursday night, Browne said it would be at least a few weeks until charges are filed.
The soldier in custody?is 38, married and has two children, ages 3 and 4. Sources have told NBC News that he enlisted soon after 9/11, trained as a sniper and was based at Joint Base Lewis McChord, about an hour south of Seattle. He served three tours in Iraq.
He arrived in Afghanistan in December and was assigned to a village stability operation. He is accused of slipping off the base early Sunday, walking to a village, entering homes and opening fire. Among the dead were nine children and three women. Of the 16, 11 came from one family. Five others were injured.
Karzai: Get U.S. troops out of our villages
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said the death penalty may be applied in this case. ?
Browne, who recently represented Colton Harris-Moore, the so-called Barefoot Bandit, said he has spoken with the soldier?s family ? who Army officials said had been moved onto the base for their safety.
Browne said he has only handled three or four military cases before, the AP reported. The soldier will also have at least one military lawyer.
On Friday, Karzai told reporters at his palace in Kabul: "The army chief has just reported that the Afghan investigation team did not receive the cooperation that they expected from the United States. Therefore these are all questions that we'll be raising, and raising very loudly, and raising very clearly."
Flanked by senior officials, Karzai met with village elders and the families of victims of the massacre, and dressed somberly in black for the start of two days of talks to discuss the killings.
"They believe it's not possible for one person to do that. In his family in four rooms people were killed, women and children were killed, and they were all brought together in one room and then put on fire. That, one man cannot do," Karzai said.
With several investigations still underway by both U.S. and Afghan officials, any discovery of more than one soldier involved in the incident would be a disaster for NATO, with Western leaders needing to win over Afghans ahead of a withdrawal by most foreign combat troops in 2014.
On Thursday, Karzai called for NATO troops to leave Afghan villages and confine themselves to major bases, underscoring fury over the massacre and clouding U.S. exit plans.
He also demanded the handover of security to Afghan police and soldiers by 2013, a year ahead of schedule.
Such a move could undercut U.S. President Barack Obama's strategy for Afghanistan and hamper efforts to mentor Afghan police and help with local governance.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Consumer prices rose the most in 10 months in February as the cost of gasoline spiked, but there was little sign that underlying inflation pressures were building up.
Surging gasoline prices put a small dent in consumer confidence early this month, other data showed on Friday. Still, Americans do not believe the sharp run-up in prices will last.
The Labor Department said the Consumer Price Index rose 0.4 percent in February after advancing 0.2 percent in January. Gasoline accounted for more than 80 percent of the rise.
Stripping out volatile food and energy costs, the so-called core CPI edged up just 0.1 percent.
"Consumer purchasing power, at least for the next few months, is going to remain pressured by rising gasoline prices," said Sam Bullard, a senior economist at Well Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, he said a trend toward lower inflation was still in place.
Consumer prices rose 2.9 percent last month from a year-ago, unchanged from January but down from a peak of 3.9 percent in September. The core index was up 2.2 percent over the 12 months through February, slowing from 2.3 percent in January.
The Federal Reserve said on Tuesday the recent spike in energy costs would likely lift inflation only temporarily. Over a longer horizon, it said inflation was poised to run at or below its 2 percent target.

GASOLINE HURTS SENTIMENT
Gasoline prices have increased 53 cents since the start of the year to an average of $3.88 a gallon in the week to Monday.
That helped pull the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan index on consumer sentiment down to 74.3 early this month from 75.3 in February.
Consumer expectations for inflation one year ahead jumped to 4 percent from 3.3 percent, but the five-year reading rose only slightly to 3 percent, and the survey's director said Americans do not expect the steep climb in gasoline costs to last.
"Overall, the data indicate that $4 gasoline has lost its shock value, although the drain on discretionary income will still affect spending, mostly among lower-income households," survey director Richard Curtin said.
Inflation expectations among investors, as signaled by spreads in the bond market, have also been on the rise, supported by a stream of relatively upbeat economic data. Inflation expectations, however, as measured in the U.S. Treasuries debt market, fell back a bit after the CPI report.
Tensions over Iran's nuclear program have kept alive fears of oil supply disruptions and have pushed prices higher.
With gasoline weighing on the economy's recovery, President Barack Obama, who faces re-election in November, has been considering tapping strategic oil stocks to ease the price pressure.
Other data on Friday showed the economy continues to expand moderately. Production at the nation's mines, factories and utilities held steady last month after a 0.4 percent gain in January, the Federal Reserve said.
Manufacturing output rose 0.3 percent, even as automakers cut production by 1.1 percent after two big monthly gains. Carmakers had raised production to meet pent-up demand for popular models in short supply.
"While higher energy prices and the euro zone recession are headwinds for manufacturers, an expanding U.S. economy, propelled by strengthening job market gains, should keep factory activity strong this year," said Paul Edelstein, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts.
INFLATION OUT PACES WAGES
On Wall Street, the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> edged up to wrap up its best week in three months. It gained 2.4 percent for the week as it topped 1,400 to reach its highest level since May 2008.
U.S. Treasury debt prices fell for an eighth straight day, with benchmark yields touching four-month highs. The dollar weakened broadly.
The CPI report showed gasoline prices soared 6 percent last month, the largest increase since December 2010. They had risen 0.9 percent in January. While the strengthening jobs market is providing some cushion against rising gas prices at the pump, salaries are not keeping up.
Average weekly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.3 percent last month after slipping 0.1 percent in January, the Labor Department said. Compared with February last year, weekly earnings were down 0.4 percent.
But there was some price relief for households. Food costs held steady in February, marking the first time in 1-1/2 years they did not risen, and apparel prices dropped by the most since July 2006.
There were also declines in the prices of tobacco, airline tickets and used cars and trucks. Recreation costs also fell. But new motor vehicle prices recorded their first increase in nine months, reflecting rising domestic demand for autos.
A measure of the amount homeowners would pay to rent or would earn from renting their property - one of the largest single components of the CPI - rose at the slowest pace since April. Rents have risen as Americans have moved away from ownership in the face of persistent declines in house prices.
"The downward trajectory for consumer price inflation remains largely intact," said Millan Mulraine, a senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

Network marketing online ? does it still work, and if so, what works? How can you be successful promoting your MLM business online?
Let me share a bit of my background.
A few years ago, when I was fresh out of college with a marketing degree, I began a career as an outside sales representative for a local industrial supply company.
I had chosen marketing and sales because I wanted to make good money, and didn?t have an overwhelming passion for a specific occupation.
My parents had been career school teachers, but I had no interest in that. I just wanted to make some decent money and not be tied to a desk all day.
Anyway, not long after I started that first job, I was approached by one of my customers about a home based business. He painted a glowing picture of opportunity, and I was convinced to attend a local meeting to learn more.
The opportunity was with a well-known consumer products company, and I was intrigued by the concept of network marketing so I signed up on the spot.
After about a month of trying to prospect people I knew, I decided this wasn?t for me. I believed in the potential of the business, but wasn?t too thrilled about going down a list of names and inviting them to a meeting. I was taught to dodge the predictable question ?what is this about? and just get them to the meeting. I wasn?t comfortable with the secrecy.
Fast forward to the early 1990?s. I was online with what we had at the time ? text based services like Compuserve and Prodigy where you could log in and have discussions on just about any topic you cared to. About this time I discovered a new network marketing business that I liked, and signed up.
The group I hooked up with had an online presence, and they were driven to take network marketing online and build a profitable business. It was just beginning to be obvious that this was going to be a huge way to reach prospects far beyond your local area and warm market, and this was before web sites and all the cool multimedia presentations we have today.
To make a long story short, I was very enthused about doing network marketing online, as it opened so many doors. Our technique was to establish a strong presence on all the discussion boards related to home business and entrepreneurship. We were allowed to put a short blurb in our signatures about our business, although at the time there wasn?t really anything to link out to.
What happened is that people looking for opportunity were watching us, and approached us privately to get details about what we were doing. We would hook up by phone and get to know each other, and build a relationship. This was attraction marketing at its finest, before that even became a buzzword.
Now, fast forward again?.as more and more people began coming online and websites and multimedia presentations became more common, a number of online marketing systems sprang up. These were good in one way, in that they consisted of a short presentation plus an opt-in, so that interested prospects could begin receiving information automatically. That?s the good part ? the sorting plus automated delivery of information on demand 24/7.
The down side ? many people who developed these systems began to teach (or strongly imply) that the system would do everything. You didn?t have to talk to people. Just get prospects to the site, let them get qualified, and begin dripping information to them at various intervals with the autoresponder.
While that sounded good in theory, it simply didn?t work out as hoped. This is a relationship business, and successful network marketing online is only possible if you look at the systems and methods as lead generating techniques. Once you get the lead, you have to take them offline and communicate.
Are you using a network marketing online system that brings in prospects for you, but waiting for them to reach out to you? Don?t. You need to reach out to them personally, by phone or whatever means you can, because people these days are really busy and distracted.
Often, your prospects have good intentions and are receptive to working with you, but life gets in the way and they just put off making the effort to reach out to you. Plus, and this is huge, many have contacted various potential sponsors and will wait to see who calls them.
Bottom line ? network marketing online works beautifully, IF you reach out and bring your prospects offline and establish relationships. Doing this sets you apart from the crowd, and helps ensure success.

Rick Santorum was projected the winner of the Alabama primary on Tuesday night by NBC News, and not long after projected to finish first in the Mississippi primary by Fox News.
The Yellowhammer State has 50 delegates, 47 of which are bound by the results of the contest. Mississippi has 40 delegates, 37 of which are bound by the results of the primary.
(Click here for real-time results maps for each of the southern states.)
The AP reports on exit polls conducted in Alabama and Mississippi:
Majorities of GOP voters in both states said they were strongly behind their chosen candidate. Across last week's Super Tuesday contests, the share of voters that secure topped 50 percent only in Georgia, Massachusetts and Oklahoma. In Alabama, Romney voters expressed more reservations about their candidate than did Santorum or Gingrich backers; in Mississippi, about half of Romney's and Santorum's supporters strongly favored their candidate, while about two-thirds of Gingrich supporters strongly favored him.
During an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday night, Santorum didn't hold back in taking aim at Romney.
"The voters out here know he's not a conservative you can trust," he said. "Governor Romney has a problem not only with his policies, but with what his policies did."
Below, a live blog of the latest developments to unfold.
The Santorum campaign emailed supporters asking would-be donors to help the campaign "build on our 'game changing wins.'" The email reads:
We did it again.
Tonight we won both the Alabama and Mississippi primaries.
We did it without million of dollars in TV ads or a friendly media. Our campaign did it with the help of friends like you. And I hope I can count on your generosity one more time.
Help us build on our "game changing" wins by donating $25, $50, $100 or more at our website right now.
All doubt has been removed. Despite what Mitt Romney's Boston consultants want you to believe, REAL VOTERS want a principled conservative in the White House. And they're increasingly coming to our side.
That's why your donation of $25 or more is so important right now.
We are aiming to raise 1 million dollars in the next 24 hours. I know we can do it. We must if we are going to counter the new wave of negative attacks from the Romney campaign.
You're a key part of that strategy. You've shown you believe in our campaign. Now I need you to recommit to that belief by donating $25 or more right now at our website.
Help us continue our winning streak. Donate $25 or more to help us right now.
And thank you for everything you do for our campaign.
Fighting for America.
Rick

Newt Gingrich spoke with supporters Tuesday night after rival Rick Santorum won the Alabama and Mississippi primaries.
Gingrich said "we'd like to come in first," but was ready to congratulate Santorum on "a positive evening and a positive result." He then launched into an attack on Mitt Romney, who had a poor showing in tonight's primaries.
"If you're a front runner and you're coming in third, you're not much of a front runner," Gingrich said.
"One of the things tonight proved is that the elite media's effort to convince the nation that Mitt Romney is inevitable just collapsed," Gingrich said. "The fact is in both states the conservative candidates got nearly 70 percent of the vote."
Gingrich continued his #250gas effort during his speech, bashing Obama for gas prices and insisting he has a solution to get gas prices down to $2.50 per gallon.
"We would never ever again bow to a Saudi king," Gingrich said, noting that America would not rely on the Middle East if he were elected president.
Gingrich made a prediction for the upcoming week, which includes Saturday's Missouri caucus.
"We'll now have three or four days of the media saying 'why doesn't Gingrich quit,'" Gingrich said. "The biggest challenge will be raising money because we came in second, which wasn't as much as we wanted."

Rick Santorum scored a victory in Alabama on Tuesday night, while the winner in Mississippi has not yet been declared.
Robert Gibbs, a senior adviser to the Obama campaign and a native of Alabama, called it a "remarkable night" for Santorum during an interview with CNN. He called it a "pretty bad night" for Mitt Romney and "not a great night by any means" for Newt Gingrich, who was a congressman from Georgia and considers the South his home territory.
Gibbs, however, took particular aim at Romney, questioning the campaign's confidence that God was on Romney's side.
CNN's Anderson Cooper asked Gibbs about Romney's statement on Tuesday that Santorum was at the "desperate end of his campaign."
"I think it sounds like Romney thought he was going to do a whole lot better in Alabama and Mississippi than the actual results reflect right now. I don't think -- look, Mitt Romney has said -- his campaign has said, that it would take an act of God for him not to be the nominee. Usually a campaign with divinity on its side would be doing better than they are tonight."
Indeed, on March 7, a Romney official confidently said, "As you can tell all we have to do is keep doing what we're doing and we can get to the nomination. For those guys it's going to take some sort of act of God to get to where they need to be on the nomination front."

Click here for a look at the night's biggest winners and losers.
One prominent conservative said Tuesday that Newt Gingrich should stay in the race despite losses in Alabama and Mississippi.
The losses could "hurt Gingrich," but did not need to knock him out of the race, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said on Fox Business Network, speaking before either race was called.
"What it will do is perhaps put pressure on Newt Gingrich even though, quite frankly, I don't think Newt ought to pull out just because he doesn't win these two states," said Huckabee, who ran for the GOP nomination in 2008. "It's just too tight, and no one has 1,144 delegates."
Gingrich has indicated that he plans to remain in the race, and his campaign is furiously attempting to walk-back previous statements that losses would hurt the candidate's credibility. Huckabee said that Gingrich will likely be encouraged by Mitt Romney to stay in the running, but that "Newt's going to stay in because Newt wants to stay in."
"Newt Gingrich is going to stay in until his money runs out or until his followers and supporters tell him to get out and frankly I agree with him," he said. "I think that's right, because someone ahead of him could slip up. And if that happens, then he moves into a position where he could start really being the key challenger."
Huckabee also downplayed the importance of the South in general. He pointed out that John McCain won relatively few southern states in 2008, showing that performing well in the South is important, but not necessary. He joked that Santorum will almost certainly say that wins in Alabama and Mississippi mean he is stronger with conservatives overall.
"That's what he's going to say, and if it turns out for him like it did for me, he'll get a new show on Fox sometime next year," Huckabee said.
Looking ahead, Huckabee said he does not expect to be asked to be the vice presidential nominee, adding that it would more likely be someone like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) or "a female that might be a great running mate."
"I haven't been invited to the dance, so I haven't bought the corsage and really I don't plan to," he said.

Mitt Romney campaign strategist Eric Fehrnstrom did his best to lower expectations for the evening in an appearance on CNN, telling Anderson Cooper that the former Massachusetts governor wasn't supposed to win either of the Southern primaries tonight.
"I don?t think anyone expected Mitt Romney to win Alabama or Mississippi," Fehrnstrom said. "This is a delegate contest and, like I said, our goal was to take a third of the delegates. Once the dust clears, there will be no ground that our opponents have made against Mitt Romney."
Even if, say, Santorum were to pull out a win in Alabama, Mississippi or both, Fehrnstrom argued that it wouldn't significantly change the mathematics of the race.
"If you look at the calendar, there are no opportunities for them to have significant wins," Fehrnstrom said of Santorum and Gingrich. "If someone can explain to me their pathway to 1,144 [delegates], I'm here."

Rick Santorum has won the Mississippi primary, Fox News projected.
Rick Santorum spoke with supporters after winning the Alabama primary Tuesday night.
"We did it again," Santorum said.
The former Pennsylvania senator immediately took a hit at his rival Mitt Romney.
"For someone who thinks this race is inevitable, he spent a whole lot of money against me," Santorum said.
Santorum shifted his focus to Obama, hitting the president on the recent hot-button issue of rising gas prices. Speaking in what he called "the heart of the oil and gas industry," Santorum said "this president almost put this whole region out of business" with his environmental policies.
"We will put this town and this region back to work so you can go back to work and have a better quality of life," Santorum said.
Santorum said he was "so encouraged" by his support in recent primaries, especially those in the southern states.
"This campaign is about ordinary folks doing extraordinary things, sort of like America," Santorum said, noting that his campaign is about "giving."
"This is a grassroots campaign for president," Santorum said. "Who would've ever thought in the age of media that we have in this country today that ordinary folks from across this country can defy the odds day in and day out?"
Santorum said he's already looking ahead to next week, noting his campaign expects a big win in the upcoming Louisiana primary and Missouri caucus. Santorum said he's heading to Puerto Rico tonight and will devote two days to campaigning there.
"We're campaigning everywhere there are delegates because we are going to win this nomination before that convention," Santorum said.

Two House Republicans from Alabama are facing tough challenges from opponents backed by the Campaign for Primary Accountability, an anti-incumbent Super PAC that last week scored a big win with the defeat of Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) in her primary.

So far, the upstart candidates are falling behind in partial, unofficial results. Rick Santorum spoke with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren Tuesday after NBC projected him the winner of the Alabama primary. He hit Romney during the appearance, saying it's "laughable" that the former Massachusetts governor is touting himself as a conservative.
"It's laughable to any conservative that's followed what's going on in this country over the last 20 years," Santorum said.
Santorum also took a hit at the pro-Romney super PAC during his appearance, noting that that's where the majority of spending on Romney's campaign is coming from.
"Governor Romney's campaign is, I'm sure, not much healthier than mine," Santorum said.
During the interview, van Susteren confronted the GOP hopeful about his recent comments accusing Fox News of "shilling" for rival Romney. Santorum assured van Susteren that her show, along with Sean Hannity's, have been "awesome" and that he thought the problem with Fox remained with the news shows.
"You are fair and balanced," Santorum told van Susteren.
Santorum said he feels "very confident" about his chances against Mitt Romney, especially with conservative voters in the South.
"The voters out here know he's not a conservative you can trust," Santorum said. "Governor Romney has a problem not only with his policies but with what his policies did."
When asked about the upcoming races in more moderate states, Santorum cited his wins in Minnesota and Colorado. He said he feels his campaign can "go to any state in this country" and "take it to Governor Romney on the issues."
