RESEARCH has shown that calming music reduces the heart rate and lowers stress levels while a strong beat stimulates the brainwaves, and that music therapy was an effective therapeutic tool for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Music therapy strategies could effect changes in skill areas important to people with learning disabilities, attachment disorder, and cerebral palsy, which was why drummer Les Skerry started the Hervey Bay Seniors in Focus music group last year.
"I realised that some members of the Cerebral Palsy League I was a part of needed to share their musical skill," he said.
"There were a lot of people with some kind of disability not being forthcoming with their talent so with the help of Julie deWaard I decided to start this group to give them the opportunity to do something with the gift they have," Mr Skerry said.
"They needed an outlet to say here we are and this is what we can do."
You did not have to play an instrument to belong to the music group; Richard Willcocks said he went along just to sing.
"I'm a trained singer but gave it away for a long time, this was a good opportunity for me to take it up again," he said.
"I've been coming for nine months and I enjoy singing and being with the people.
"I call myself the main noisemaker; I make a lot of noise and let the others worry about the music," Mr Willcocks said.
Because of the difficulty in getting transport to Hervey Bay every week, Mr Skerry was working on starting a similar music group in Maryborough to give musicians there an opportunity to share their talent.
If you would like to sing and play an instrument and would like to share your musical talent with others, contact Les on 4129 0998.
