Legimi Wants To Be The 'Spotify For Ebooks' With A Business Model ...

Legimi is definitely a startup I?ll be watching closely in 2013. Put simply, it aims to be the ?Spotify for ebooks,? in which for a monthly subscription, users get access to a potentially infinite library of reading material, all accessible via the cloud. But more than that, this Polish startup, whether it succeeds or not, epitomises the collision of old media business models with new technology and new consumer habits.

After years of being told that one day consumers will access all of their media from the cloud, anytime and anywhere, thanks to the likes of Spotify, Deezer and Rdio (music), or Netflix, Lovefilm and Hulu (film and television), that day has finally arrived.?The subscription, cloud-based model, combined with new consumption devices ? tablets, smartphones, and Internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes ? and near-ubiquitous broadband, has ushered in an era where consumers no longer feel the need or desire to own the media they consume.?So, why not apply that same consumption model to ebooks?

Well, as it turns out, there are a number of companies who already are, but in many ways it?s still very early days. Niche offerings, such as Safari Books Online, which specialises in professional and developer-related content, have been around for a while, where a subscription model is viewed by publishers as less-risky because the audience is already somewhat ring-fenced, and content becomes outdated quickly. More mass-market is Amazon?s Kindle Owners? Lending Library, but this is still very limited and can hardly make the claim to be anything close to a ?Spotify for ebooks.? Then there?s the much-hyped and Founders Fund-backed Oyster, which is yet to launch but plans to offer an all-you-can-eat subscription model with an emphasis on mainstream content.

However, the New York-based startup is remaining tight-lipped about which publishers are signed up, and it?s here where many commentators predict that any subscription-based ebook service will fall down at the last hurdle: They simply won?t be able to strike the content licensing deals required, with the number of publishers needed to make the all-you-can-eat proposition a reality. That?s because the new consumption model requires a new licensing model where publishers are given a share of subscription revenue based on the number of books accessed.

Or does it?

This is where we return to Poland. Legimi thinks it?s found a way to change the consumer offering without having to tear up the legal or commercial framework that already exists for ebooks on a pay-per-download basis.

?Our approach is different; we pay the whole price of an ebook once an end user exceeds its free sample (approximately 10 percent of the book),? Legimi co-founder and CEO Mikolaj Malaczynski tells me in an email. The premise being that most readers never make it past the free excerpt, but if they do, the company pays the full wholesale price to publishers. ?We have statistically calculated the average consumption for tablet users and smartphone users, which is lower than one book per month,? he says.

Or maybe another way of looking at it is that the business model relies on a tl;dr generation (my words, not Malaczynski?s) where multiple content and services are constantly vying for a user?s attention, and that this is especially true when content is consumed on an always-connected tablet or smartphone. Whether or not consumers are reading less long-form content or not, however, perhaps misses the point. As long as the number of books read past the free sample remains inline with the overall economics of a monthly subscription, then the model could work, or at least act as a bridge until such time when publishers are more willing to embrace the idea of a subscription model.

To that end, Legimi has already launched an MVP in the form of an iPad app in the startup?s native Poland, while an iPhone version should follow in January, with Android and Windows Phone also in the pipeline. I?m told that major publishers locally are playing ball, too, such as W.A.B., Insignis, Muza, and Buchmann, enabling Legimi to offer a range of popular international and domestic titles.

Moving forward, Malaczynski says that the priority is to keep expanding the available catalogue and to optimise the business model, presumably to find the sweet spot in terms of what to charge. But much more ambitiously, Legimi is planning to launch in two additional European markets next, likely Germany and the UK. It?s at this point when the licensing ?loop hole? and assumptions about consumption will really be tested.

?If you ask about the average consumption of one book per month, I am not sure if it?s a universal figure,? concedes Malaczynski. ?We will need to test it market by market, but we have an algorithm to verify it.?

On the upside, Malaczynski says that the rights infrastructure for publishing doesn?t differ too much between countries, meaning that Legimi can hopefully avoid spending ?years negotiating new agreements with publishers, which don?t really understand the subscription model.?

And that?s where we come full circle. In the end, a ?Spotify for ebooks? seems inevitable, as consumer habits find themselves ahead of the market once again. It?s probably more a case of when not if. Perhaps Legimi, or another startup willing to take its model and run with it, can help to make it happen sooner rather than later. Here?s to 2013.

'Revolutionary' banana slicer is newest target of snarky Amazon reviews

seabeetow4u/Amazon

"I tried using the slicer as an ornament as suggested, but unfortunately it didn't stay on the tree long," writes Amazon user seabeetow4u.

By Helen A.S. Popkin

With 635 five-star reviews on its Amazon product page (out of more than 1,200 reviews ... and growing), it seems obvious that the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer is the one gift you can buy yourself that will make up for all that thoughtless junk you've already re-gifted to friends and loved ones. Those who apparently did receive this "revolutionary" product over the holiday season are burning up the Amazon reviews as 2012 draws to a close.?

Just read what these satisfied reviewers have to say over this demarcated banana shape that is "dishwasher safe" and "faster, safer than using a knife."

"No more winning for you, Mr. Banana!" declares the review voted "most helpful" by other Amazon's users. "For decades I have been trying to come up with an ideal way to slice a banana," writes Amazon reviewer SW3K. "'Use a knife!' ?they say. Well ... my parole officer won't allow me to be around knives. 'Shoot it with a gun!' Background check ... HELLO! I had to resort to carefully attempt to slice those bananas with my bare hands. 99.9 percent of the time, I would get so frustrated that I just ended up squishing the fruit in my hands and throwing it against the wall in anger. Then, after a fit of banana-induced rage, my parole officer introduced me to this kitchen marvel and my life was changed."?

In "a military endorsement," Happy Hubby writes, "I have served in the U.S. Army for over 12 years. I can say that there is technology being used by the military that is rarely seen in the civilian sector." He does, however, caution, "this is a CIVILIAN model and not designed for field use!"

There are those who do not agree with the raves, however.?

"Angle is wrong," writes?J. Anderson in one of the 91 two-star reviews. "As shown in the picture, the slicer is curved from left to right. All of my bananas are bent the other way."?

Another reviewer points out that taking one's country of residence into account is important before making this purchase. "I?live in Australia and need a Region 4 slicer," writes Paul Anthony F. Brown. "I now have a whole bunch of bananas sitting on my kitchen counter that I can't slice and a life slightly more woeful and abject than it was before I received the slicer."

India-Pakistan teams joint New Year bash cancelled

Calcutta News.Net Sunday 30th December, 2012

"Though we had planned the joint celebrations, the same has been cancelled as team India players will be enjoying a much-deserved day off with their families in their respective homes on the New Year's eve," said Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) treasurer Biswarup Dey.

Both the squads were slated to arrive in the city Monday for the second One-Day International to be played Jan 3, but now the hosts would arrive in batches Tuesday.

The Pakistan team would arrive as slated.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was expected to be present at the match, is also likely to give it a miss in the wake of the gang-rape and death of a Delhi girl.

"The prime minister would be in the city to inaugurate the Centenary Session of the Indian Science Congress Jan 3, and we had plans to invite him for the match. But in the wake of the tragedy, he is unlikely to be present for the game," a CAB official said.

The CAB, however, has invited several former India players and captains, including Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar, for the second game of the three-match ODI series.

Merkel's rival Steinbrueck says euro zone austerity too severe

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck, who is running against Chancellor Angela Merkel in next year's election, said austerity measures being imposed on struggling euro zone countries were too severe.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS), Steinbrueck said austerity measures were pushing some countries to do too much too soon. He said there would be massive protests in Germany if such a heavy dose of austerity were to be imposed so quickly.

"The savings measures are too severe, they're leading to depression," said Steinbrueck, 65, a Social Democrat (SPD) who was finance minister from 2005 to 2009 in Merkel's right-centre grand coalition government.

"Some societies are being forced to their knees. Budget consolidation is in some ways like medicine. The right amount can save lives while too much can be lethal."

Steinbrueck noted that some countries were being forced to make spending cuts that amounted to five percent of their gross domestic product (GDP).

"In Germany that would amount to 150 billion euros (of spending to be cut)," Steinbrueck said. "You can imagine what the protests would be like on German streets with that."

Steinbrueck said he and the centre-left SPD were clearly in favor of efforts to stabilize the euro zone - due partly to German national interests and also due to Germany's responsibility to the European Union.

"My advice to the SPD is that we shouldn't treat the European issue in the election campaign as a minor topic or without being courageous," Steinbrueck said, referring to fears in the SPD that talking about the euro zone rescue efforts would benefit Merkel more than the SPD.

"Europe has to be stabilized out of our national interests and out of our responsibility to Europe."

Tumor boards may add little to VA cancer care

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Getting doctors together to discuss the best treatments for cancer patients in U.S. Veterans Affairs hospitals was only linked to a minor improvement in care in a large new study.

Analyzing the records of 138 VA medical centers, researchers found that the presence of a so-called tumor board - a group of cancer treatment experts - only affected seven out of 27 measures of quality and processes in patient care, and not always for the better.

"This does not support the hypothesis that tumor boards are doing a lot to improve care," said Dr. Nancy Keating from Boston's Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, the study's senior author.

Tumor boards are a standard part of medical care in the U.S. and are generally made up of several different types of doctors, including surgeons and radiation oncologists, who review patients' cases and make recommendations for their treatment.

The study's authors write in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that previous research found hospitals dedicate about 50 hours per month of their doctors' time to participation in tumor boards.

"It is interesting that despite the fact that tumor boards seem like a good thing and they are so well established, there is so little literature on them," said Keating.

She and her colleagues wanted to know whether tumor boards actually made a difference.

To do that, they linked together information and records from the VA's 138 medical centers on cancer patients treated between 2001 and 2004.

The team found that 75 percent of the medical centers had at least one tumor board that discussed most of the conditions the researchers were interested in: colorectal, lung, prostate, breast and blood cancers.

Then, using established national guidelines, the researchers developed a list of 27 markers for the quality and type of care patients received.

For example, the researchers checked whether patients with stage II or III rectal cancer got the recommended dose of chemotherapy and radiation before surgery to remove the cancer.

Overall, the researchers found the presence of a tumor board was only linked with differences in seven of the 27 markers.

"And some of those seven were actually a situation where the tumor board was associated with worse care," Keating said.

In addition, recommended care for specific types of malignancies, such as blood cell cancers, was more often seen in centers with no tumor board (56 percent) or only a general tumor board (61 percent) than in centers with tumor boards specializing in blood cancers (39 percent).

"This is a little bit off-putting because it challenges the conventional wisdom that tumor boards are a good thing," said Dr. Douglas Blayney, a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine in California.

"I think the main issue that remains to be answered: Did the recommendations of the tumor boards actually get carried out?" added Blayney, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study.

"We think patients benefit from having their cases reviewed at the outset, but we leave it to the medical system to get acted upon," he said.

Keating said researchers need to do a "deep dive" into tumor boards to find out more. She said they still need to know how the tumor boards are structured, and what types of cases are discussed.

Until then, "I do think that people and centers who are investing time and energy in their tumor boards should really think about how they are structured, and if they're set up in a way to improve patient care," she said.

Blayney told Reuters Health that he doesn't think hospitals should scrap their tumor boards based on these findings, because there are new possibilities with new technology.

"The promise of telemedicine technology makes extra use of academic centers available to patients who may live in rural locations and doctors who are remote from the academic centers," he said.

For example, the rural doctors of a woman with breast cancer can conference with a tumor board that specializes in breast cancer at a large, urban academic center.

"Again it's tapping into the knowledge and experience of a broad range of physicians," Blayney said.

Ouya developer console gets an official unboxing, flaunts transparent case (video)

It's a little early for an Ouya teardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accoutrements are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

Despite Uneven Results, Alzheimer's Research Suggests A Path For Treatment

Brain scans using Amyvid dye to highlight beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. Clockwise from top left: a cognitively normal subject; an amyloid-positive patient with Alzheimer's disease; a patient with mild cognitive impairment who progressed to dementia during a study; and a patient with mild cognitive impairment.

Slide courtesy of the journal Neurology

It's been a mixed year for Alzheimer's research. Some promising drugs failed to stop or even slow the disease. But researchers also found reasons to think that treatments can work if they just start sooner.

Scientists who study Alzheimer's say they aren't discouraged by the drug failures. "I actually think it was a phenomenal year for research," says Bill Rebeck, a brain scientist at Georgetown University.

Rebeck is optimistic because during the year, several very different lines of research all began to suggest a new way of thinking about Alzheimer's ? that it has to be stopped before it damages the brain.

"Once you start to lose a lot of synapses, once you start to lose a lot of neurons, your brain can't recover from that," Rebeck says. "And so when we start with people who have symptoms of the disease, treating them turns out to be unsuccessful."

That explanation comes in part from studies that used a new research tool approved by the Food and Drug Administration in April. The tool is a drug called Amyvid that's injected into the bloodstream and travels to amyloid plaques in the brain. Those are the plaques associated with Alzheimer's.

The dye, also called florbetapir, lets researchers detect even tiny plaques using a positron emission tomography, or PET, scanner.

"In the PET scan you can see whether somebody has amyloid in their brain...before [they show] symptoms of the disease. I think that's huge," Rebeck says.

Researchers have already used the technique to show that amyloid begins to build up decades before people start having problems with memory or thinking. Rebeck says it should also provide a much quicker way to gauge whether a new Alzheimer's treatment is working.

Another advance this year was a study showing that the brain begins to function differently long before symptoms of Alzheimer's appear.

Lori Beason-Held of the National Institute on Aging presented the study at the Society for Neuroscience meeting. She says previous research had found brain changes among people in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

"Our study has gone back even further and discovered changes in the brain that occur up to 11 years before any symptoms occur in individuals who eventually become cognitively impaired," says Beason-Held. And the changes probably start even earlier, she says.

That might sound discouraging, but Rebeck doesn't see it that way. "What that says is there's an opportunity, there's a window when if we could stop that amyloid from accumulating, or start to clear it out of the brain, then you could prevent those symptoms from actually ever happening," he says.

Another study this year suggests a way to do that. Researchers in Iceland discovered that families with a rare gene mutation are much less likely to get Alzheimer's. The mutation appears to interrupt a key step in the formation of amyloid.

In order to form amyloid, the brain has to first cut up a larger molecule, explains Robert Vassar of Northwestern University. That step requires an enzyme called beta-secretase or BACE 1.

"BACE 1 is like a pair of molecular scissors, and what the mutation does is sort of interfere with the way the molecular scissors can cut. It sort of like, dulls the blades," Vassar says.

Just a few months ago researchers came up with a drug that does the same thing that the gene mutation does naturally, says Rebeck. This drug, though, may have to be administered before amyloid has begun to build up.

Michael Raffi, of the University of California, San Diego, says the new thinking about amyloid and Alzheimer's is a bit like the current approach to cholesterol and heart disease. Doctors don't wait until someone has a heart attack before putting them on drug that lowers cholesterol.

"Really the ideal situation is to have checked their cholesterol levels 15 years prior, and seen whether it was elevated, which would imply that they have an elevated risk of having the heart attack, and starting the medication then," Raffi says.

It's still not clear, though, whether amyloid is the new cholesterol. "It took a long time for us to make that connection between cholesterol and heart disease," says Rebeck. "That's been very successful. It's been very helpful in so many people's lives. We're just [at] earlier stages in studying Alzheimer's disease."

Why You Need Social Media for Sales, Marketing, Customer Service ...

This is a guest post by Will Vicary. If you would like to submit a guest article, please check out our guest post guidelines.

The internet and social media have together created huge challenges for businesses over the past decade ? and it?s not just marketing departments that have been affected: companies have had to adapt every area in their organisation, including sales, customer service and recruitment.

Customers no longer rely on traditional advertising such as billboards or TV adverts to learn about new products.

Social media has changed the rules and empowered customers by giving them new tools to find, share, collaborate and buy with.

Sales

Social media has had a profound impact on the process sales. From a customer perspective, the rapid expansion (and near-universal popularity) of social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube has dramatically shifted the power balance towards those looking to buy a product or service.

Today?s customers are more connected, more social and more aware than ever. Obvious traditional sales techniques are becoming less effective as consumers become savvier and more informed as a result of social networking with friends and peers. As a result, sales representatives need more than just good pitching skills; they need to be to understand their customers inside and out and offer solutions, not promotions, to attract business.

The biggest impact social media has had on the sales process is that marketing no longer has complete control over what is said about a brand. Connected customers are going beyond the company website to read blogs, follow Twitter handles, and join in LinkedIn conversations to gain outside perspectives to inform purchasing decisions.

Sales-related information is now so prevalent that a recent Forrester report estimates between 50-70% of the buying process happens before a sales rep even gets involved.

Although social media has altered the way salespeople must approach their jobs, it has also provided them with the ability to learn more about their customers and prospects than ever before. Today?s sales reps can use social media platforms alongside customer relationship management (CRM) tools to enhance their customer interactions, and truly understand and effectively service customer needs.

Marketing & customer service

The walls between customer service and marketing are breaking down as the popularity of social channels rises. Marketers are now finding new and innovative ways of engaging with consumers to build up a brand?s image, gain positive word of mouth and enhance their online PR.

Organisations? relationships with their customers is no longer a one-way street, with brands shouting at consumers through an advertising megaphone.

It?s a new cooperative environment involving two-way conversations and dialogue rather than monologue.

In this atmosphere, the line blurs between what constitutes marketing and what constitutes customer service. Marketing becomes a process of delivering solutions to current and potential customer?s pain points, while customer service success returns positive sentiment across social media channels, and the subsequent proliferation of word-of-mouth marketing.

When it comes to social customer service, the key is to know your audience, understand that there are fast response expectations on social media channels, and to keep in mind the inherent public nature of these platforms, which can directly impact your brand.

Customers who have received good customer service through social media channels are bound to be more likely to buy from that brand again, all of which points to the simple fact that brands who ignore social media do so at their peril.

HR and recruitment

When it comes to recruitment, some businesses are using social media very effectively, particularly when it comes to the research and identification of potential candidates, which can be performed relatively cheaply and quickly.

The most popular professional social network, LinkedIn, has a massive 175 million members. Employers are taking note of the importance of social media in the recruiting process, and the majority of businesses are turning to social media to find and evaluate job candidates.

According to Career Enlightenment, on average 20% of employers now use social networking sites to research job candidates ? and of that percentage, a third said they?ve rejected candidates based on something they found about them online.

The explosion of social media has been felt throughout the business world, with many companies now recognising the benefits that this phenomenon can reap for them. To this end, organisations need to evolve or be left behind by more forward thinking and adaptable socially-optimised competitors

Powerful new tool is quantum analog of phase space flow

Dec. 26, 2012 ? UK-based physicist Ole Steuernagel from the University of Hertfordshire, alongside Dimitris Kakofengitis and Georg Ritter, have found that a new powerful tool they call 'Wigner flow' is the quantum analogue of phase space flow.

Wigner flow provides information for quantum dynamics similar to that gleaned from phase space trajectories in classical physics. Wigner flow can be used for the visualisation of quantum dynamics. Additionally, and perhaps even more importantly, Wigner flow helps with the abstract analysis of quantum dynamics using topological methods.

Ole Steuernagel, from the University's Science and Technology Research Institute, said: "Because trajectories are missing in quantum phase space, physicists did not pay much attention to the associated flow-fields, although these do exist. Now, our research shows that quantum phase space flow is well worth studying."

In classical physics, phase space trajectories give rise to flow-fields representing the dynamics of the system along its trajectories; they yield additional insight into a system's behaviour.

Quantum theory phase space trajectories do not exist because Heisenberg's uncertainty principle does not allow for the formation of sharply defined trajectories. But quantum physicists have not given up entirely on phase space. The study of the next best thing, the movement of quantum physics' phase space-based probability distributions has actually boomed in recent years.

Sophisticated schemes for the reconstruction of the most prominent of these distributions, 'Wigner's function', from experimental data, have set quantum phase space analysis on a firm footing. Yet, since quantum trajectory studies cannot be carried out, some of the power of established classical methods is missing.

The researchers have been studying Wigner flow, which is based on the dynamics of Wigner's function, and have shown that it reveals new and surprising features of quantum phase space dynamics. It forms, for example, vortices that spin the 'wrong' way round and which appear in the 'wrong' part of phase space, when viewed from a classical physics standpoint. So, such dynamical patterns are manifestations of the quantum nature of the system.

On top of such new riches the team has established the existence of a conservation law that reveals a new type of topological order for quantum dynamics. As an application they have shown that Wigner flow sheds new light on quantum tunnelling, the fundamental process that governs the workings of electronic computer circuits, and also the decay of radio-nuclides.

Snoutless Hero Dog 'Kabang' Beats Cancer With Treatment From ...

DAVIS, Calif. (CBS/AP) ? A veterinarian at the University of California, Davis has some good news about a dog from the Philippines who became an international hero after sacrificing its snout to save two young girls.

Veterinarian Gina Davis said the dog named Kabang appears to have beaten the cancer it was suffering from.

Kabang, however, is still facing treatment for heartworms in its arteries before it can have the gaping wound on its face closed.

Newspapers in the Philippines have reported that Kabang had her snout and upper jaw sheared off when she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle, saving her owner?s daughter and niece who were apparently about to be hit.

Kabang ended up in Davis earlier this year after a nurse from Buffalo, N.Y. spearheaded a fundraising campaign to bring her to the U.S.

Home for the holidays: Fewer US troops are absent this year

When President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama issued a special holiday greeting over the weekend to US troops fighting overseas, they were addressing the smallest deployment of combat troops in at least five years.

?This week let?s give thanks for our veterans and their families,? the president said. ?And let?s say a prayer for all our troops ? especially those in Afghanistan ? who are spending this holiday overseas, risking their lives to defend the freedoms we hold dear.? Mr. Obama added that the number of troops in harm?s way is coming down, because ?the war in Iraq is over [and] the transition in Afghanistan is under way.?

The number of troops in Afghanistan is at its lowest level since the Obama-ordered ?surge? of about 35,000 troops in 2007 took the total over 100,000.

RECOMMENDED: Top 3 lessons the US military has learned in Afghanistan

With Obama, who will take the oath of office for a second term on Jan. 21, pledging to bring America?s ?decade of war? to an end, the number of combat troops deployed overseas is likely to continue shrinking.

Still, such holiday messages to the troops are likely to remain on the president?s agenda for years to come. Still to be decided are the pace of the drawdown of the remaining 66,000 US troops in Afghanistan and the size of any residual US force in Afghanistan after most NATO and US personnel leave at the end of 2014.

That?s not to mention other crises, from Syria to Iran, that might spark some form of US military intervention.

Get our FREE 2013 Global Security Forecast now

Then, as Mrs. Obama emphasized in the video greeting, there are the 2.4 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and their families, who will continue to require services beyond holiday acknowledgments from the president.

?Our military families sacrifice so much on our behalf, and Barack and I believe that we should serve them as well as they serve this country,? she said, drawing attention to the ?Joining Forces? effort that she and Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, have spearheaded to engage Americans in supporting military families.

In the meantime, thousands of combat troops ? some on their third or fourth deployments ? are spending another Christmas and New Year's away from their families, some decorating mini Christmas trees on their bases or wearing red-and-white Santa caps to kindle the holiday spirit.

While Obama focused on troops in his greeting, military personnel are not the only ones on hazardous foreign duty this holiday season. On Monday, an Afghan policewoman shot and killed a US civilian police adviser in the latest in an uptick of so-called ?insider? attacks.

In 2012, more than 60 foreign military and civilian personnel, most of them Americans, have been killed by Afghan security forces. A major thrust of the US work in Afghanistan is to prepare Afghans to assume responsibility for their country?s security needs by 2014.

Getting Started in Home Brewing in Philly ? Eat, Drink & Run Philly

Brewing your own beer is not as daunting as one may think.? Sure, there may be confusion and frustration during the initial steps as well as some impatience during waiting periods.? Still, when you are fortunate enough to make a good batch of beer, the end result, as well as the whole process to get there, can be quite rewarding.

The first step, of course, is to obtain the right equipment and basic ingredients for brewing.? Fortunately, Philadelphia has a couple of great spots specialing in home brewing:?Home Sweet Homebrew in Center City and Barry?s Homebrew Outlet?in Olde Kensington.? Home Sweet Homebrew?s owner, George Hummel, is extremely helpful in ensuring you?purchase the right equipment, suggesting ingredients based on your personal taste preferences.??There are?beginner?s beer kits, which contain all the ingredients you need?for a set recipe, or you can?buy individual ingredients for your?own personalized mix.

I bought the?deluxe kit, which comes with a?fermenter, a secondary glass carboy fermenter, bottle capper?and other necessary instruments?and runs about $89.95.? Additional items to purchase included a sanitizer (perhaps the most important item!), empty bottles, a?large stainless steel?pot?and a long-handled plastic spoon.

My first attempt at brewing was?an amber ale.??As a?beginner, I wanted tBoiling the worto?keep it basic and?bought the?kit with the ingredients and recipe.??When you start brewing, you quickly find out that you pretty much have to sanitize everything (the fermenter, the instruments, the beer bottles, etc.) before each use.??The big steps on brewing day include boiling the wort and mixing the ingredients before immediately cooling the pot and then placing them in the fermenter.? These first steps of the process take a?few hours.? I made the mistake of not budgeting enough time and starting the process at around 10 p.m. on the first night.? It didn?t finish until after 1 a.m.

A couple of days later, I started becoming familiar with perhaps the second most important part of?brewing: siphoning.? The beer has to be transferred from the primary fermenter to the secondary glass carboy, and the way to do it is through siphoning.? It also helps to have someone assist in the siphoning process to hold the?hose as it fills up the carboy or ensure that the siphon flow doesn?t?get stuck.

Siphoning from the carboy back into the primary fermenterAbout a week later, it was time for bottling, which is when the fun?really starts and you feel the process has been successful.? Of course, everything involved in bottling (such as the bottle capper, caps,?hoses and bottles) has to be sanitized.? Priming sugar is boiled with water and then added to the fermenter.? The beer is siphoned back into the primary/bottling fermenter.??I attached?a bottle filling wand and?hose to the fermenter nozzle, and it was time to fill the bottles and cap them.? The?brewing made about 40 or so bottles.

Bottled beer

The finished productYou?re supposed to wait about another one to three?weeks before you start drinking the finished product.??I figured?eight days was good.? And the result?? It was?a pleasant amber ale taste, with distinctive hoppiness.??Relieved at the apparent success, I was eager to share?it with friends, many of whom commented that they enjoyed it.? No one has?told me to?my face that they hated or didn?t like it.? Except for my dad, who?is too used to Budweiser and Corona and thought it was too hoppy for him.??The best part about home brewing is not just the end result; rather, it?s about sharing?your good product with others.

(AP) ? Shoes are coming out of the closet and landing under the Christmas tree. They're a top seller this holiday season ? a big feat considering most years they don't even make gift lists.

Laranda Williams, 39, used to buy clothing, tools and electronics as presents for her family. This year, though, she looked at their feet and got inspired. She bought some Vans sneakers for one of her sons, two pairs of stilettos for a girlfriend of another son, and Nike running shoes for her husband.

"Electronics and clothing get redundant," said Williams, who lives in Clarksville, Tenn. "Shoes are just the wow. I know they're going to use it, and I know they're going to love it."

The shoe-gifting fetish is part of a larger trend of shoppers buying loved ones gifts that they not only like, but also can use. It's this habit of practicality that Americans have been clinging to throughout the economic downturn.

This holiday season, it's meant that mom might not buy Molly an extravagant evening gown she'll maybe wear once. But mom may splurge on $600 Jimmy Choo pumps if Molly needs work shoes or $150 Nike sneakers if her daughter's an avid runner.

"It's about practicality and splurging at the same time," said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Inc., a market research firm. "There's a sense of, 'I know what you need but you haven't gotten it for yourself.'"

As a result, footwear was the fifth most popular gift on shoppers' lists on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year, according to NPD. A year ago, shoes didn't even make it into the top 10 gifts for the season.

Overall, sales of cross training shoes rose 16 percent to $197.8 million, and sales of basketball shoes rose 18.7 percent to $353.5 million for the three months ending in November. During that same period, sales of women's fashion footwear grew 3.2 percent to $6.12 billion.

Chelsey Gates, manager of Chuckies New York, a designer shoe store on the Manhattan borough of New York City, said she's seen more men buying shoes for the women in her life. One of the most popular gifts: Chelsea Paris gold trim ankle-high boots for $695.

"Men come in with cards with perfect instructions: style numbers, sizes and prices," she said.

The trend comes as stores have been trying to find ways to boost sales of shoes, which can carry profit margins of up to 50 percent.

As part of Macy's overhaul of its New York flagship store, the department store combined three different shoe departments and expanded their overall size by 10 percent. The new department has 250,000 pairs of shoes, including everything from $99 Nine West leopard print platform pumps to $400 Donald Pliner multi-colored pumps.

"Women love shoes. This is a category that they care about," said Muriel Gonzalez, an executive vice president at Macy's.

This fall, Saks Fifth Avenue also beefed up shoe departments in about a dozen of its stores. The move continues the luxury retailer's efforts at its flagship New York City store, which it first expanded in 2007 to include more shoes, better service and more stock room capability.

The flagship shoe department, which got a second remake this fall, now takes over the 8th floor, which previously also housed a gift area. The department, which is 40 percent larger, now is the second most productive department in terms of sales per square foot, behind the main floor, which sells cosmetics.

In the past few weeks, Elizabeth Kanfer, Saks' senior fashion and co-brand director for women's accessories, said the retailer has noticed boyfriends or husbands walking in with their significant others and buying a pair of shoes that cost at least $595. She declined to offer sales figures.

"There has been a resurgence of footwear easily in the last six years," Kanfer said. "You can easily upgrade your wardrobe with a pair of shoes."

Even smaller chains are trying to cash in on the trend. Fleet Feet Sports-Chicago, a two-store chain of running and fitness apparel, launched a gift registry this year that allows people to record their preferred brand, style, color, size, width and model of shoe from hundreds of options.

Catherine Moloznik, Fleet Feet's product manager, said so far in December, shoe sales are up about 20 percent compared with a year ago, in part because of the registry.

"Shoes have turned the corner in the gift category," said Robert Burke, a New York-based fashion consultant. "They've become the new handbag."

Owen Badillo, 35, certainly never thought of buying shoes as gifts for others in the past. But this season he bought two pairs of $30 Asics running shoes for his 28-year-old sister, who's a mother of two small children and a runner.

Badillo said he's more confident in his gift this year than last year when he ran around trying to pick up clothes for his sister, not really knowing "what she wanted." This year, he said it was clear what she needed.

"Her shoes are all torn up. So I am focusing on what she really needs," said Badillo, who lives in Oklahoma City and works at an oil and gas company.

(AP) ? The international envoy to Syria said after talks with the country's leader Monday that the situation was "worrying" and gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Lakhdar Brahimi's mission came as activists reported intense fighting in the central province of Hama, where anti-government gunmen entered the predominantly Alawite town of Maan. Assad's regime is dominated by members of his minority Alawite sect, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam, while most of the rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Brahimi said he and President Bashar Assad exchanged views on the crisis and discussed possible steps forward, which he did not disclose. He spoke briefly to reporters after meeting the Syrian leader at the presidential palace in Damascus.

"The situation in Syria is still worrying and we hope that all the parties will go toward the solution that the Syrian people are hoping for and look forward to," Brahimi said.

Syria's state news agency quoted Assad as saying his government supports "any effort in the interest of the Syrian people which preserves the homeland's sovereignty and independence."

Brahimi has apparently made little progress toward brokering an end to the conflict since starting his job in September, primarily because both sides adamantly refuse to talk to each other.

The government describes the rebels as foreign-backed terrorists set on destroying the country. The opposition says that forces under Assad's command have killed too many people for him to be part of any solution.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.

Brahimi's two-day visit was to end later Monday. It is his third to Damascus as an envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League.

The security situation in Damascus and elsewhere in the country has declined since Brahimi's previous visits. Instead of flying in to the Damascus International Airport as he did on earlier visits, Brahimi drove to Damascus over land from the Lebanese capital Beirut because of fighting near the Damascus airport.

In Hama province, where rebels launched an offensive against army checkpoints and posts last week, opposition gunmen entered Maan and raised the opposition flag over the main police station, Hama activist Mousab Alhamadee said via Skype. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels included members of Jabhat al-Nusra, which has been branded a terrorist organization by the U.S. and is affiliated with al-Qaida.

The Observatory and Alhamadee said the rebels shot down a Syrian government MiG warplane that was attacking rebel positions in and around Maan. The Observatory said at least 20 soldiers and 11 rebels were killed in Monday's fighting.

A U.N. human rights report released last week said the civil war is increasingly a sectarian conflict between rebels from the country's Sunni Muslim majority and government forces largely supported by the country's religious and ethnic minorities.

The Observatory said Syrian army helicopters bombed the town of Talbiseh, in the central province of Homs, killing at least 14 people, five under the age of 18. The Local Coordination Committees said the attacks targeted a makeshift hospital and a bakery.

Reports by anti-regime activists about a government airstrike Sunday in the rebel-held central town of Halfaya that killed scores of people also cast pall over Brahimi's visit.

Some activists said the strike had targeted a bakery. Amateur videos posted online showed the bodies of many dead and wounded scattered in a street. The videos appeared to be genuine and corresponded with other AP reporting.

The Observatory for Human Rights said Monday it had collected the names of 40 men and three women killed in Halfaya. The group also reported seeing photos of the dead bodies of 15 more unknown men.

On Sunday, it reported 60 dead.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's head, said he could not confirm that the attack was an airstrike or that it had targeted a bakery.

Syria's state news service blamed the attack on "an armed terrorist group" ? its shorthand for the rebels ? accusing them of filming the aftermath to "frame the Syrian army."

In the videos, armed rebels are clearly among those tending to the dead and wounded.

In neighboring Lebanon, the state news service said unknown gunmen kidnapped three Syrians and one Lebanese man who were traveling from an area near the Syrian border to the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Syria's conflict has exacerbated tensions in Lebanon between those who support and oppose the Assad regime. Both sides have dispatched fighters to Syria, and there have been some clashes between the rival sides inside Lebanon itself.
