Breast cancer site marks year - The Orange County Register

An Orange County breast surgeon's website to help women navigate a diagnosis of breast cancer has marked its first year.

Dr. Jay Harness, who practices at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, said the videos at breastcancer

answers.com have been viewed more than 6.3 million times. More than 600 videos from breast cancer doctors cover topics ranging from prevention to reconstruction. The site is sponsored by Genomic Health, which makes genetic tests for breast cancer.

Harness said this week that the website will add videos from cutting-edge experts at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The website also contains 15 questions that Harness says patients should ask their doctors.

CALIFORNIA LOW IN USE OF ANTIBIOTICS

California is among the five Western states with the lowest rate of antibiotic use, according to the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy.

The others are Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

Overuse of antibiotics results in drug-resistant infections, making them harder and more expensive to treat.

The report covers prescription use from 2010. That year, the highest rates of use were in Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Residents of those states take about twice as many antibiotics per capita as those living in the West.

GOING ONLINE TO LOSE WEIGHT

Social media has the potential to help obese children lose weight and develop healthy lifestyle habits, the American Heart Association says in a new scientific statement.

Doctors evaluated research about online efforts to help kids lose weight, exercise and improve eating habits. Nearly all 12- to 17-year-olds have Internet access at school or home.

With Internet weight loss/exercise programs, children and teens had greater success rates the more they interacted online with peers and counselors.

"Some research shows that even in virtual social networks, people tend to associate with others like themselves," Dr. Jennifer S. Li of Duke University said in a statement. "So if you develop a network of kids who are overweight, you can have an impact on all of them ? in the real world and online ? because if one starts making healthy changes, the others will be influenced to do so as well."
