Sketchy reports emerge on alleged high school gunman

A student who was nicked in the ear Monday during a shooting in a high school cafeteria in Chardon, Ohio, has identified the teen gunman as a fellow student who had ?got into a gothic phase? in recent years.

Nate Mueller, a student at Chardon High School, told NBC affiliate WKYC.com that he was sitting in the cafeteria at a table with three of the victims and was grazed in the ear by one of the bullets as he turned away from the gunman. He said he was friends with the suspect until the end of eighth grade.

?He kind of got into the gothic phase and kind of silenced himself from his friends,? Mueller said. ?But I mean, he still had friends. He was still a nice kid ? I don?t think anybody really ever expected it to be him. We didn?t think he would hurt anybody.?

Other students and a parent, reacting to reports identifying the alleged shooter, described him as an ?outcast,? a victim of bullying and being from a "broken home."

?He was not like a jock, a popular kid,"? Evan Erasmus, an 18-year-old high school senior, told Channel 5. ?He has friends, but he would be considered the outcast type."

In a separate interview with CNN, Erasmus said, ?He just came from a really broken down home and he was living with his grandparents. He was more of a quiet type of kid. He was really nice, though, if you did talk to him.?

Mueller, the student who was in the cafeteria when the gunfire erupted, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that one of the friends he was sitting with was dating the suspect's ex-girlfriend.

Another student, freshman Danny Komertz, told The Associated Press that the gunman was an outcast who had been apparently bullied.

Greg Fletcher, a parent who said his son, a 10th grader, was about 15 feet from the shooter in the cafeteria, told Fox8.com that his son did not know the suspect but other students had told him he was ?kind of shady and possibly suicidal.?

MWC 2012: Huawei's Ascend D Quad Invasion Targets Apple's iPad 3 and iPhone 5

Unveiling a new series of top-end, quad-core Ascend smartphones and its speculated 10-inch MediaPad at 2012's MWC, Huawei has confirmed it's gunning for a slice of Apple's high-end device market pie.

At its Mobile World Congress?press event, Huawei unveiled a slew of new handsets, including its highly anticipated iPhone 4S-killer, now known as the Ascend D quad. Not mincing its words, the company made a bold claim, stating that it intends to ship 60 million smartphones in 2012 - something it may be able to do with the right marketing, considering the impressive tech contained in its latest smartphones.

Similarly, as a final "and another thing" the company stated that it would be releasing a new 10-inch version of its MediaPad, a mid-range series of tablets that has thus far ignored the UK.

In any case, the company has pulled out all the stops on its latest smartphone range. Below are the technical details currently known about the devices:

The Ascend D Quad

Huawei's MWC flagship, the Ascend quad is the company's latest attempt to break into the currently Samsung- and Apple-dominated, high-end device market.

Running Google's latest Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, the unit is set to boast some insanely powerful tech. During its event, Huawei was bold enough to claim that the device's processor is currently the fastest in the world.

Housing a high definition 4.5-inch display with a 32-bit true colour graphic processor and 330ppi pixel density, the unit is set to be powered by the Huawei-made K3V2 quad-core processor - which clocks in at speeds of 1.2 and 1.5 GHz - and boasts 1GB of RAM.

The 330ppi pixel density rivals that of a finely printed magazine and easily matches that of the Retina display in Apple's iPhone 4S.

Additionally, the unit will pack an 8-megapixel rear facing camera capable of recording 1080p HD video. Backing this up will be a 1.3 mega-pixel front facing snapper.

Keeping the whole show running the Ascend D quad will be powered by an 1800mAh battery which, according to Huawei, should give the unit a two-day battery life with "normal use." Huawei also confirmed that the device will support LTE - a pretty useless fact considering the UK is still in the archaic 3G age.

In terms of physical dimensions, the Ascend D quad is also pretty nice. Measuring in at a slim 8.9mm thick and 65mm across. Gilding the lily, the device is also set to house Dolby Digital 5.1 sound enhancement and earSmart tech designed to maximise noise cancellation.

While being coy about the unit's price, Huawei has confirmed that the unit will be launched in numerous territories, including Europe, in either Q2 or Q3 of this year.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad XL

Besides the Ascend D quad, the company also unveiled the Ascend D quad XL handset. As far as the International Business Times UK can tell from Huawei's event, the device is pretty much the same as the regular D Quad just with a larger 2500mAh battery.

Huawei Ascend D1

Alongside its quad-core beasts, Huawei also unveiled its Ascend D1 dual-core handset. Outside of its 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 chip the unit boasts pretty similar spec to that seen on its quad-core counterparts.

Similarly powered by Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, the D1 houses a 4.5-inch, 720p screen boasting the same 330ppi pixel density as the D quad. Past this, it has an 8-megapixel rear facing camera capable of 1080p video capture and the same 1GB of RAM seen on the D quad.

The 10-inch MediaPad

Revealed during the Q&A session of the company's MWC press event, the new 10-inch MediaPad tablet has been confirmed for European release. Though shown during the session Huawei revealed next to nothing about the device's specs, shying away from even letting journalists touch the device.

All that is known is that the unit will house a 10-inch 1080p, IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera and the same new K3V2 chip found inside the Ascend D Quad smartphone. Running Ice Cream Sandwich, the 10-inch MediaPad is set to ship in China and Europe Q2 this year.

Our 208th Dad in the Limelight is Max Long. I want to thank Max for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing him with all of you.

Hi, my name is Max. I?m a father of 2 and husband of 1. I?ve also been in the United States Navy for a little over 13 years now. I started out as a lowly Seaman Recruit in boot camp, but I?ve managed to work my way up, and I?m currently a Lieutenant enjoying some well deserved shore duty in beautiful San Diego, CA.

I recently started a blog called Military Dad (http://militarydadblog.com). I try to write about fatherhood and family from the point of view of a service member, and I try to write about the military from a father?s perspective. I had an unorthodox beginning to blogging, but I?ve fallen in love with it, and there?s nothing I enjoy more than talking about my two passions: my family and the Navy.

2) Tell me about your family

I have been married for almost 8 years to a woman that initially only liked me for my car. She?s the love of my life, and I can?t imagine being without her (I still have the car, just in case).

I also have 2 kids that are my reason for everything. Our daughter is 5 years old and one of the smartest people that I have ever met. Her younger brother is 2 years old, and there?s absolutely nothing that can slow him down. If I were to start over and someone asked me what I wanted my children to be like, I would make absolutely no changes from what I currently have. They are amazing and I am truly blessed to be a part of their lives.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

My biggest challenge probably involves managing my expectations. Both our my kids are so bright and so quick to pick things up that I forget how young they are. I start expecting them to excel at everything, and sometimes, I get frustrated and angry when they actually act their age. I constantly have to remind myself that they are only 5 and 2 years old.

4) What advice would you give to other fathers?

I?ve developed a practice over the years that has served me very well. Whenever I am really frustrated with the kids or physically exhausted to the point that I can?t give them the attention they need, I simply lie down on the floor. It?s amazing how much they love the fact that I?m there, even if I?m not moving a muscle. They can climb on me, drive cars on me, or just read me books. It keeps them completely entertained, and it?s really not very taxing for me. My advice would be that when all else fails, just lie down on the floor.

5) Seeing that you (or your position) are in the limelight, how have you come to balance parenthood and outside life? If you are currently not in the limelight per se, please still answer this in regards to how you balance parenthood and outside life.

With regards to the Navy and family, I try to keep my work at work as much as possible. If I need to vent, I?ll wait until the kids have gone to bed. My hours aren?t always convenient, but this helps to ensure that I enjoy the time that I do have with the family.

With regards to the things besides work and family, I am truly blessed by the fact that my wife is also my best friend. I don?t need bowling nights or weekend golf trips because I would much rather stay home with the family and watch movies in my pajamas. Therefore, when I?m at work, I?m at work, and when I?m at home, I?m at home. It works well for us.

6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?

I?ve learned that fatherhood is much more of an art than a science. There are no perfectly right answers, and there are multiple ways to achieve the same thing. Every father is different and every child is unique. What works for me won?t work for others. While there are obvious examples of bad parenting, there is no clear blueprint for being a good father. As long as you care, things will fall into place. The biggest thing I have learned is to not judge others because their methods are different than mine.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

Being a father is the hardest thing that I have ever done. It?s the only thing that has ever kept me up at night questioning myself. Fortunately, it?s all worth it just to see the smiles on their faces.

I would also say that the word ?home? has taken on a different meaning for us as a military family. In her 5 years of life, our daughter has lived in 6 different houses, 5 different cities, and 3 different states. As a result, it?s difficult to pinpoint a geographical location for what most people think of as home. My home is where my family is. The buildings around us and the things that we own are nothing more than shells designed to keep us safe and happy. It?s great to know that no matter where I go, as long as my family is there, I?m home.

When I left for my 3rd deployment, our daughter was 12 months old. When I returned 6 months later, I was expecting to find the same little ball of chub that could barely walk and said about 10 words. When we were unloading the car, I asked her to take a pillow into the house. She looked at me and said, ?ok, daddy.? Then she turned around and actually did it. It was such a tiny moment, but half a year?s worth of change was encapsulated in that one response. While I was a little upset because I had missed so much, that feeling was overshadowed by the immense amount of pride that I had for her. It is something that I will never forget.

Many young people don't know what constitutes sensible alcohol consumption

ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? A new study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review reveals that young people do not possess the knowledge or skills required to adhere to government guidelines for responsible alcohol consumption. This article is part of the March special themed issue of the journal on low risk drinking guidelines.

Led by Richard de Visser, PhD, of the University of Sussex, researchers examined young people's knowledge of, and use of, government guidelines for safe alcohol consumption.

A total of 309 secondary school students and 125 university students in England completed a survey regarding knowledge and beliefs. The university students also reported their alcohol consumption and completed tasks in which they poured their "usual" drinks and what the government guidelines for maximum "unit" consumption on a daily and weekly basis.

Most respondents lacked the knowledge and skills required to drink in accordance with government guidelines. Participants' "usual" drinks were substantially larger than one unit, and participants tended to underestimate the unit content of drinks.

For 5 of the 7 items examining knowledge and guidelines, fewer than half of the respondents gave correct responses.

Although university students gave a significantly greater number of accurate estimates than did school students, only ? of their estimates were within plus or minus 10% of actual content. The majority of estimates were underestimates: 52% among school students; 65% among university students.

"Our results mean that people's reports of drinking patterns in research may lead to inaccurate estimates of the health effects of different levels of alcohol use," de Visser notes. "There may be a need for more and/or different alcohol education in schools and the media."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The president just couldn't say no: Mick Jagger held out a microphone almost by way of command, and soon Barack Obama was belting out the blues with the best of them.

The East Room of the White House was transformed into an intimate blues club on Tuesday night for a concert featuring blues all-stars of the past, present and future ? and the president himself.

The surprise performance by Obama came at the end of the playlist when the blues ensemble was singing "Sweet Home Chicago," the blues anthem of Obama's home town.

Buddy Guy prodded the president, saying he'd heard that the president sang part of an Al Green tune recently, and adding, "You gotta keep it up."

Then Jagger handed over the mic, and Obama seemed compelled to comply.

"Come on, baby don't you want to go," the president sang out twice, handing off the mic to B.B. King momentarily, and then taking it back to tack on "Sweet Home Chicago" at the end.

That was how Obama ended the night.

This was how he began it: Obama said sometimes there are downsides to being the president. You can't just go for a walk, for example.

And then there are the times that more than make up for all those frustrations, he said, like Tuesday night, when Jagger, King, Jeff Beck and other musical giants came by the house to sing the blues.

"I guess things even out a little bit," Obama joked at the start of a rollicking East Room concert that was electrified by Jagger and the rest.

"This music speaks to something universal," Obama declared. "No one goes through life without both joy and pain, triumph and sorrow. The blues gets all of that, sometimes with just one lyric or one note. "

King, 86, arrived in a wheelchair but rose tall to kick off the night with a raucous "Let the Good Times Roll," quickly joined by other members of the ensemble. And he followed with "The Thrill is Gone."

Obama was clearly savoring the moment, closing his eyes at times and nodding his head as he lip-synced the words.

The president rose at the end to introduce the ensemble as the "White House Blues All-Stars" for the final song of the night, "Sweet Home Chicago."

"For Michelle and me," the president said, "there's no blues like the song our artists have chosen to close with ? the blues from our hometown."

With that, the ensemble wrapped up the evening with "Sweet Home Chicago." And then Jagger handed off the mic to Obama for his presidential coda.

In advance of the concert, Grammy-winner Keb Mo had joked during a rehearsal break that Obama himself would perform, and there could even be a record in the works. He joked that Obama's record would be called, "After the second term, now I can finally get my groove on."

Maybe he wasn't joking after all.

The lineup for Tuesday's concert spanned multiple generations, from legends like King and Guy to young faces such as 26-year-old Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and Gary Clark Jr., whose style blends hip hop, contemporary soul and indie rock. Also performing were Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, with actress Taraji P. Henson as the program host and Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader.

The blues concert will be part of the "In Performance at the White House" series that airs on the Public Broadcasting Service. This one, designed to recognize Black History Month, will be broadcast on Monday on PBS stations and aired later on American Forces Network.

Archbishop: NYC isn't like 'Sodom and Gomorrah'

ROME?? New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who will become a cardinal this weekend, said on Thursday that part of his new job will be to convince the Vatican that his city is not a modern-day version of the Biblical Sodom and Gomorrah.

Dolan, who also holds the powerful post of president of the U.S. Bishops Conference, will be made a cardinal by Pope Benedict on Saturday at a solemn Vatican ceremony known as a consistory.

They include the archbishops of Toronto, Prague, Utrecht, and Florence. The head of the Siro-Malabar Catholic rite in India will also become a cardinal.

Another new American cardinal is Edwin O'Brien, head of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a group that is a major funder of the church in the Holy Land.

Flash mob singing ABBA's hit Take a Chance on Me helps Far Northern couple through wedding proposal

THERE was romance and the sounds of ABBA music in the air yesterday as a flash mob broke out in song at Villa Romana for a Valentine's Day proposal.

And it was groom-to-be Joe Evert who was being asked to Take a Chance on Me after being with his long-time girlfriend Alex Glasson of 10 years.

A group of about 50 people gathered at the Esplanade restaurant, and as a waiter popped a bottle of champagne, people from nearby tables and the footpath joined the sing-a-long.

Halfway through the song Ms Glasson gave Mr Evert the diamond ring and red-faced, he popped the question as the mob continued to sing, dance, clap and cheer around them.

Six days ago, Ms Glasson ordered the ring and with the help of teenage son, Jonah, planned the marriage proposal, with family and friends keen to help celebrate the "long-awaited" proposal.

"It was just unreal," Mr Evert said.

"I am totally lost for words, it was like something from a movie."

The Kurrimine Beach couple met at the Tully swimming pool and had their first date on Valentine?s Day at Mission Beach in 2002.

But it has not all been plain sailing, with the couple having to rebuild their lives after cyclones Larry and Yasi.

"Ten years, six children between us, two cyclones and now a tiny engagement ring. I am so happy," Ms Glasson said.

"One afternoon I was walking along the Cairns Esplanade listening to Abba and thought it would be a fun idea to propose to Joe, as it?s a leap year, and to do something that would really put him out of his comfort zone."

Jonah hinted the wedding wouldn?t be complete without a flash mob surprise.

The couple?s daughter, Wavy, 5, who was born one month after cyclone Larry, was part of the excitement.

Opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities to participate in relationships and sexuality education (RSE) are often constrained by the attitudes and perceptions of family carers, frontline support workers and professional staff. In order to understand how the barriers might be reduced, a study was undertaken in Northern Ireland with samples drawn from these three stakeholder groups, involving nearly 100 persons and using group and individual interviews. Although there was agreement on the need for RSE, four barriers were commonly reported: the need to protect vulnerable persons; the lack of training; the scarcity of educational resources; and cultural prohibitions. The impact of these barriers could be lessened through partnership working across these groups involving the provision of training and information about RSE, the development of risk management procedures and the empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities.

Reuters reports: Last summer, Zen monk Koyu Abe grew and distributed sunflowers and other plants, such as field mustard and amaranthus, in an effort to lighten the impact of the radiation and cheer local residents of Japan's Fukushima city. Now he is trading his ceremonial robes for a protective mask, working with volunteers to track down lingering pockets of radiation and cleaning them up.

"The damage here in Fukushima is different from the destruction caused by the tsunami," Abe said.

Eczema is a disease that affects the skin, causing unsightly and uncomfortable patches of dry, flaky and red skin. This is not ordinary dry skin although it can be made worse by the same things that cause dry skin such as dry air and exposure to some chemicals. The eczema rashes generally do not respond to the treatments used to heal dry skin. There are many treatments available to treat eczema but most contain synthetic ingredients which can lead to negative side effects. Recently, studies have been conducted on natural eczema treatments, some of which have been proven to be effective.

Surprisingly, the one treatment that has shown great promise is not a topical ointment but rather something eaten. There is some evidence that probiotics, when added to the regular diet of young children and infants, can reduce current rashes and prevent the onset of new ones. Probiotics have the added advantage of providing those that consume them with a host of other health benefits.

Most often, the methods of combating these rashes are designed to be used topically, that is to be directly on the patches themselves. Almost all of them have some hydrocortisone in them as this is effective at reducing itching and inflammation. However, most also have a host of other chemicals in them that may prove to exasperate the very symptoms the user is trying to relieve. Happily, there are all natural options.

There is a cream made from the chamomile plant that has been studied and proven effective. When applied to the rash for two weeks, some users noticed significant improvement. In a study where it was compared to hydrocortisone cream, the chamomile cream proved to be more effective for most who tried it.

A cream made of witch hazel did not seem to be as effective, but still did offer its users some relief. As is often the case with eczema, some users reported drastic improvements while other saw almost none. More testing is needed to determine why these differences exist.

Perhaps the most promising of the recently tested natural products is an extract from licorice. During testing the users reported significant improvements in the size and discomfort of the rashes. Also, there seemed to be a reduction in new outbreaks.

As with any treatment, it is important to discuss the options with a health care provider. Also be aware that some people would like to make some cash by selling things that have not been proven to be effective and in some cases may be harmful. Take the time to find out exactly what is in anything you intend to use in or on your body.

Natural skin care is important regardless of the age of the person. Natural baby products should be your preferred choice for your baby.
