Mayor Emanuel?s update to assault weapons ban to be considered

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called a special City Council meeting Wednesday morning, hoping aldermen will approve updates to the city?s assault weapons ban and a safe passage ordinance.

The council?s Public Safety Committee forwarded the updates to the full council Tuesday.

City officials admit the measures will have a limited impact on the gun violence plaguing some city neighborhoods.

After passage of the state?s new concealed carry law, Emanuel wants to add more weapons to the banned list.

And with parents complaining about long commutes through violent neighborhoods because of school closures, the mayor wants to stiffen the penalties for gun crimes committed in school safety zones.
